Sharon,
In reading this I have to wonder if it might be a bit arduous, that is, lots and lots of city walking. Just my $.02 here.
Maybe a theatre matinee afternoon ? I saw "The Lady in Black", I thought is was just okay, but the school group of teenagers screamed a few times !
Yes, skip the zoo. Take the Thames cruise to Hampton Court - this is an all day event mostly - cruise and tour of the Palace, but very good. One caveat: the Thames is a tidal river so the cruise is timed to the river's low & high tides.
There's an all day trip to Stonehenge, Salisbury and another place (can't remember right now).
Do make reservations for the tea at Kensington. Their tea is well priced, but the least fancy of all the high teas in my experience, yet I like the setting and it's nice after touring Kensington Palace (recommended) as all in the same vicinity = less walking. Historic Royal Palaces > Home > Kensington Palace > Food and drink
Fortnum & Mason is fun to shop at, but I found their tea scanty at 30 pounds ($60 USD). I prefer tea at Harrod's top floor, but that's just my preference. The Ritz is my all time favorite, hands down. If you're going to splurge here, call one month ahead.
