Over the years in timesharing I have learned to limit the time/distance I find it worthwile to travel from a resort to sightsee. Generally, I look for enough to see within a one hour drive for at least four or five days, and maybe an hour and an half on the others. Early in timesharing, I used to look at a radius two hours out, and sometimes even a bit more, but that is spending too much time driving and the cost of gas in Europe is also rather steep.
If timesharing will not work within that framework, I drive point to point and use hotels. On some early timeshare trips to Germany, for example, I did way too much driving back and forth to the resort, and would have been better off forgetting use of timeshare and just driven point to point.
Some upcoming trips that I had once considered using timeshare, like Sicily and Cyprus, I have concluded that driving point to point is far more practical for sightseeing. Cyprus seems to be a fairly easy trade with DAE, but between the size of the island and the complications of the political divsion of the island, it doesn't seem that one base would be at all practical.
One that I am still somewhat up in the air on is Crete. While I have found timeshare to be the best option for smaller islands like Rhodes, Corfu, and Malta, Crete is large enough that I am really questioning whether any of the timeshares would be a convenient enough base to see the whole island without excessive driving or whether it would be better to drive point-to-point. Does anyone who has been to Crete have any suggestions?
