  • Update on Boutique La Jolla in Mazatlan

We have been in Mazatlan since June 25th. We spent our first week at Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay using an exchange through RCI before moving to the smaller Boutique La Jolla next door. PBEB was really nice and we loved reading in the shaded hammocks in the afternoon when we had more than enough sun for the day. This is truly a first class resort.

La Jolla is a very small resort that we purchased fixed time for the month of June in the 2nd floor unit that overlooks the pool and beach. While June is a slow time of the year, we wanted it so that we could bring grandchildren here for a beach experience. The beach is awesome and the weather perfect for a beach vacation. Nearly every day, my husband will say “Have I told you how much I like this place?”

Now there is not much to do here as only 8 units are completed and for 2 of the 4 weeks that we have were here, we were the only 2 people here. One week however, 5 units were occupied – not bad considering that one of the 8 is the model and another is owned full time by a couple. This resort is very low-key and most likely will stay that way, but is a great R&R place. The pool and beach are nice. It is close to Cerritos Beach where you can find Playa Bruja, Roy’s, and Last Drop for restaurants.

We have a car (we drove to Mazatlan from Phoenix), so we can drive to restaurants, the Mega, and shrimp market. We also brought a small electric grill and have cooked a lot of bacon wrapped shrimp with micro-waved veggies and make guacamole a lot too.

All of the staff is super accommodating. The housekeepers, maintenance, Security, and the general manager are all super. The manager seems to be on top of everything and when we talked to him about the WIFI signal being low, he loaned us an access point to use in our unit and we have full strength WIFI now, and another day they added an additional WIFI access point for the Villas. It is very safe here and there are 2 security guys 24/7, one at the gate and one that walks the grounds. There is a safe in one of the bedrooms for our passports and cash. We do not even lock our door when we go down to the pool or beach! Our unit is spotless and even cleaner than the unit we had at Pueblo Bonito!

We have not used the restaurant or bar since we do like to grill shrimp and fish on our deck. There is a menu in the unit and the prices seem reasonable. For the summer, they have converted the pool bar to a massage area. We have only been aware of 3 people getting massages (must have been tour gifts), so I do not know if this will last as an amenity, but I did hear a salesman say they were going to have a fitness center and massage area in the new Tower building. The massages are $70 USD.
While we have been here, they drained the pool to repair loose tiles and while they had the pool drained, they replaced all the lights. They completely re-grouted the entire pool before filling. It took 40 truck loads (5000 gallons each) of water to fill the pool. We have also seen them adding additional air conditioning units to the restaurant area. We are pleased to see them work to keep everything up and make improvements.

Each morning, we sit on our balcony (above the model) and watch all the folks that come for the sales presentation. A couple of the salesmen must have started at the Mayan Palace, because they are quite successful and keep folks here a long time – not the promised 90 minutes! Since the resort is small, so is the sales staff consists of 8-10 salespeople and then there are 2-3 managers that come over to help with the final push, and of course 3-4 guys that give you one last chance for an exit package before you get your gift – pretty much like every timeshare, fractional ownership, or residence club (that is what I heard a salesman call it the other day).

This resort has gotten a bad rap from folks that bought into the Tower that is basically RCI Points and floating time. Until the Tower is finished, it is basically “smoke & mirrors” since the Villas were sold as fixed time and the 8 that are built are sold out. The Tower is not complete, but they are working on it. They poured the floor of the 4th floor last week and workers are doing the finish concrete work on interior walls on the first and 2nd floors. They are working on the portico between the Tower and the pool. We are just amazed at how they do things here. Nearly everything is done manually, not with equipment. But, they have 20-30 guys working 6 days a week. Today, we walked through the Tower construction and were amazed at how much they have done this month. The model unit is not far from being done and several other units are partially complete. I have added photos that I took today to my Picasa photo albums.

We got here May 25th, not June 25th. Sorry 'bout that.

This resort may be all that you say, but it should be ashamed of itself for scamming Americans and Canadians into purchasing there by deceiving them. They obviously have done it many many times as they are pro's at fraud.

If you have to "trick" people into purchasing at your resort, what does that say about you.

        La Jolla Cheaters

My husband and I were deceived and cheated by La Jolla. We lost $9,000. We were stupid and they were cheaters. That is all I can say. DO NOT TRUST THEM.

While you are there, why don't you go down and speak with the "sales staff", namely Mr. Kelly, and ask him why they use deception as a means to sell their resort, rather than honesty. I have no problem with the resort itself, and would probably love to visit there if I had not been deliberately lied to during my timeshare presentation which resulted in my purchasing there, which I would not have done if I were not distinctly told that they would "buy our RCI timeshare from us", freeing us from that financial obligation and enabling us to purchase at LaJolla. This was a deliberate lie, a sales tactic to persuade us to purchase. Then.... months later, we find out they are NOT buying our RCI timeshare from us, but instead have placed it with a timeshare resale company to "try" to sell it for us at a price that they quoted us they would purchase it from us. Total lies and deception, deliberate. They really should be ashamed of themselves for resorting to such low-life standards in sales in order to get their units sold. It is an embarassment to salespeople as a whole (I am a Realtor), that anyone would resort to such tactics, AND be allowed to continue to do it. It is obviously well endorsed by the manager Mr. Kelly.
I sincerely suggest that you along with all the other "happy" owners of the resort, have a discussion with Mr. Kelly and his staff regarding their fraudulent selling tactics, and suggest that they reimburse each and every owner that was cheated out of their hard earned thousands of dollars. Most of us are not rich people, we are middle class people, just trying to enjoy our savings by owning such a place, but instead we are basically stolen from by these individuals, crooks. It is just unbelieveable, and every time I think of how they could do this to unsuspecting, innocent victims, it makes my blood boil! I hope they burn in hell for their cheating and lies. Disgusting! Its an embarassment to own there.

I do believe in "what goes around, comes around", and their day is coming around.
How do they even sleep at night, knowing that they cheat and lie to people on a daily basis in order to make their sale. They don't even care how their lies impact the unsuspecting victims of their greed. When found out, and presented with the facts of their lying to make the sale, they lie some more, and tease you with a possible refund but then they pull out of their hats, the "we will refund you only half of what you have paid to purchase it". WTF!!!! Who does that????? That's called "negotiating". Pfft!

By the way, if anyone who is so happy with their purchase there, wants to actually buy mine back from me so I can be free of these disgusting low-lifes, it is $13,000 plus a whopping $1500 for closing costs. FOR SALE!!!!

I have no idea how long ago you bought it but you have one full year to send a complaint to Profeco in Mexico if you feel that you have been defrauded.

They are slow in responding but they have helped many consumers who bought in Mexico. I would call them and talk to someone who speaks English and they will tell you what to do and if you have a claim.

Many of the resorts are beautiful in Mexico but their tactics of selling them are far from ethical. There are so many complaints on the Internet if you Google by resort name. Have a look yourself. It's awful.

It was last November 2010, and I have sent in a complaint to Profeco, they replied in Spanish. I've tried to deal with Mr. Kelly but he insists on "negotiating" a refund of only half of what we paid, and does not include the $1500 closing costs.
Yes, the resorts are beautiful "Pueblo Bonita" is where we stayed, loved it. Sales tactics are totally unethical. They go in the back door of your brain to get you to buy there (LaJolla), you don't even know what hit you until months later when you decide things are taking way too long to complete, and start to investsigate on your own. As a Canadian, we think everyone is honest, we certainly don't expect to be lied to when making a purchase in another country. Naive may be the word, sorry. Thanks for the tip, I will try calling Profecto. Its not even that I mind owning at that resort, what I mind and don't want to be associated with, is this place BECAUSE of their sales tactics. If all of the owners there put pressure on the staff for their sales tactics, they would refund all who want to be that they have defrauded, and start with a clean slate. Otherwise, all this crap about them will continue to be all over the internet. And yes, I have read it is everywhere about LaJolla. As I said I'm a Realtor and it can very soon be all over my company as well, internationally. That would not be good for them.

Somebody I know used an American attorney who was practicing Mexican Law in Arizona. He had good results with getting all his money back at a timeshare resort where we owned too. I even spoke with his attorney once as our timeshare friend referred him to us but I forgot his name and the name of the company too. It is so long ago and we didn't hire him.

I found this here so have a look. Just Google for attorneys in the USA who practice Mexican Law. There are many. They normally do general real estate contracts but some will get involved with a timeshare too.

Suesells - we will be at the LaJolla on Wednesday and plan to stay the entire month of June. I will post about the progress since June 2010.

We do not have plans to talk to anyone in the sales area as we already own an entire month in the the Villa that overlooks the pool and ocean. I have heard horror stories from others, but ours was not a horror story. While we already owned other timeshares, we were not looking to trade any in and we felt the price was reasonable so we bought. We did not feel lied to and everything that our salesman told us was on the up & up with no pie in the sky promises. Actually, the sales presentation was very simple and low-key - this is what we have and this is what it costs. This was such a pleasant surprise to us, that we decided that we would like to own part of an Oceanfront Villa. The price was right and the maintenance fees are fixed for the length of the contract. The m/f were the only negotiable part.

So far, we have been happy with our purchase. We bought a unit that was nearly completed at the time and did not buy into the RCI Points system - we wanted fixed time in a specific Villa. My personal opinion is that the fixed time Villa sales were totally different from the RCI Points sales. We are hoping to see that the tower building that has the floating time units has opened and others will be at the resort. This is our 3rd visit and for the past 2 years, we have been the only people there except for one week. They included HSI, with our purchase, but we had that before and were not pleased with it, so we transferred that to some friends who did not own timeshares but wanted to be able to use them.
