swimmable beaches?

Part of the reason it's not high on my list. Fear of danger aside (my brother's associate did get kidnapped - granted it was a long time ago), I don't like getting hassled/hustled/ripped off and don't get me started on the government and general corruption. On our last trip my son was able to understand the cabbies and valets speaking in spanish about overcharging us, which was just aggravating. There seemed to have been a noticeable change in attitude there as immigration issues are now front and center. Oh, yeah, the food poisoning didn't help. I think I'm talking myself out of it.... though now I will check out Royal Haciendas...

All pretty good reasons not to want to go back.
How about the Dominican Republic?

I haven't done TS's in the DR, but I've been to some beautiful beaches there and the people are friendly. Don't drink the water though. I've heard that Las Terrenas in Samana is beautiful.
