  • Sunset World, formerly The Sunset Group

We bought a timeshare with the Sunset Group on a 1 plus 3 bi-annual basis at the Sunset Lagoon resort in Cancun, Mexico 3 years ago, costing about $12500. Interestingly, they have now changed their name to Sunset World, presumably because when searching for Sunset Group on the internet there are a whole load of complaints about them! We were verbally promised that if ever we needed to sell our investment the Sunset Group would always buy it back, probably at a greater price than we paid as the units were increasing in value all the time and were very sought after! They even showed us documents relating to a resale they’d just done where the seller had indeed made a profit on his initial investment!
They also offered us $500 on the day to bank our studio with them to rent out, and told us that in the future if, for any reason, we could not use it, then we could rent it out through them, we just had to contact them and ask them to bank one of our weeks. We were informed of these assurances by three separate sales representatives, one of them the manager, on the day of the presentation.
When we couldn’t use our studio during the first year we asked the Sunset Group to rent it our for us, but were informed that they did not rent out owners´ apartments and we would have to go through a separate company at our own expense!

We have never been able to use the timeshare due to changed circumstances after we returned home. After a year, the time they state you must own the timeshare, (and also the cut off time for filing an official complaint through the US authorities!), we contacted the Sunset Group and asked them to buy it back as they had promised. We were informed that they were not repurchasing at that time! However, our request would be considered in the future!
We have tried relentlessly over the past 2 years to get the group to repurchase it, with always the same answer, their inventory is full but we will be added to a list! A very long one I would imagine!
We also paid $500 to an independent company who promised they had buyers waiting and could sell it with no problem, also no joy! Since advertising it 2 years ago the price has been dropped dramatically, now on an ´Open to Offers´ basis but there is still no interest!
In hindsight we realise how stupid we were to buy in the first place but the offers of free gifts and a chance to spend our week’s holiday using their luxurious facilities had tempted us into attending their presentation in the first place. The sales team made it look very attractive, a solid investment! (we also wrote this as a reason for buying!) and were very persuasive, employing high pressure sales techniques at the presentation.
I feel compelled to warn anybody out there similarly tempted by their persuasive offers not to be drawn in and to stay well away from this company. I intend to warn as many people as possible about the Sunset Group and would ask anybody else who has been scammed by them to do the same. I would also welcome any comments and think that we can maybe get more results as a group. I have set up an email account for people to contact me with their views.

        Angelskier,

I am so sorry for your frustrating experience.

Mexico is a most desirable destination with great resorts.

That being said there remains some very unscrupulous organizations that will deceive vacationers while on a visit to Mexico in order to sell a timeshare.

Please realize that we would like to hear how your entire experience works out.

Please continue to pursue a solution. Best of Luck.

Also there are some very experienced members here that might be able to offer some other tips or alternate solutions.

            Help

After reading the number of posts regarding the Sunset World (sunset group)I felt I also had to write about my experiences with this company. I also purchased 1 plus 3 weeks at the Sunset Lagoon 5 years ago. I was promised they would buy back my timeshare (once it was paid for in full) at or above the original sale price. I was also promised that they would rent my timeshare for any unused weeks. I was fortunate to use almost all my weeks at the Sunset Royal which I must mention has the best staff, from the housecleaners to the waiters to the consierge. I was so impressed with the services I received I (foolishly I might add) was convinced to purchase at their new resort Hacienda Tres Rios, which I was told was not really a timeshare but a Residential Suite. I was promised the same things as I was told when I first purchased my timeshare....that they would buy back my timeshare at or above the original sale price. Upon returning to the Sunset Royal following their aggresive sales pitch and my subsequent purchase there, I was in a horrible roll over accident in their company van. Fortunately I was not seriously injured but not so for the driver who suffered major injuries. Afterward, I was too afraid to travel the same road down to the new resort and consequently have never stayed there (I have owned it now for over 3 years). Since then I have asked them to buy back my timeshare at Hacienda Tres Rios several times with the same response....they are not buying back any timeshares at this time. I even asked to have my weeks there transferred to the Sunset Royal which they also refused to do (I went to an entire presentation of the upgrades to the Royal at which time they tried to get me to purchase them at a unreasonable price). I looked into using an outside timeshare sales company, but refuse to pay any upfront money (which they all require). I am writing in hopes that others won't get caught in this trap and that if anyone has had success at having Sunset World re buy their timeshare I would appreciate hearing about them.
            Thank you for listening.

Sunset World remains unethical & are liars

So many comments about people Sunset has done wrong in one way or another. Why has there not been any true action taken? My husband and I were in Cancun in Nov 2011, at the Ocean Spa Hotel. Our salesman took out photo ID's to make a copy of them & ultimately held them in their possession until after we finally gave in and signed the papers (over 6 hours, it does not tkae 6 hours to make copies!). We declined their offers & asked for our ID's to be returned to us multiple times and our requests were ignored. I feel like we were held against our will and forced to give into their dirty sales tactics. Like many others have stated, we sent written notification of our cancellation within the 5 days and were told that we "waived the right to cancel by receiving the benefits of the club". This is complete bull crap! How can the same basic story continue to play out? There has to be some way to stop these people, or at least put a halt in their game. I have not come across anyone else who mentioned having their identification held from them, is this a new tactic they have found to be beneficial? I hope we were just the victim of one saleman's extremely unethical tactics. I don't understand how the US government can continue to allow Mexican companies to commit such fraud against US citizens, shouldnt there be something the US government can do? I thought that the USA was a powerhouse of sorts & that we have rights as consumers (in any country, not just Mexico). I am very disturbed by what happened to us and I have never fell victim to any scams. We would not have been a victim of this scam either if they had not held our IDs from us because we never had intentions of buying into their timeshare. All timeshares (in the US and abroad) have their problems and not everyone will be satisfied, but seriously? Holding someone in a room against their will until they give in??? Isn't that really overstepping the boundaries?!!!!??? I have provided information to Profeco and they are reviewing our situation. They say they will file a formal complaint if it is warrented. If Profeco can not help us, what should we do? I am considering attempting to contact US government officials. I hope it doesn't come to it, but I am also considering contacting the media with our story to make people aware of how they do business. My fear is that if we take this measure, they will cause more trouble for us because we will provide them bad publicity. Some clause in the contract refers to this not being permitted. It seems like parts of their contract is valid & others portions are not....depending on whether it serves any benefit to them that is!

                Sunset World Cancun

We too have bought a timeshare (1 + 1 bi-weekly) while staying in Cancun in December 2011. We have not had the opportunity to use it yet since it is only January 2012. I really didn't want to do it and we kept saying no but the price just kept getting better and better so my significant other gave in and did it. I guess if I was having really bad feelings about it I could have stopped him but I didn't. I really liked Cancun so I guess I thought too, what the hell, it would be great to have the opportunity to keep coming back here and next time bring the kids. But once back in Canada I started looking on the internet about timeshares and Sunset World and have read nothing but horrible stuff and it is starting to make me really nervous and sad that we got ourselves into this situation. I keep bringing it up to my man about everthing that I have been reading and he told me to stop talking about it already, I guess I am getting him paranoid as well. I really would just like to hear something good about this situation and timeshares for once. Could someone please tell me something good about it and how it has at least gone when they have used their time. Please, desperate to hear something good!!!

Are you asking about the Sunset group or timeshares in general??

There are lots of very happy timeshare owners here, I don't know if we have any Sunset owners.
                    Does that help?

The Sunset Group now calling themselves Sunset World, did not change their name to protect the innocent. For over a decade they have been the worst timeshare organization in Mexico. Allegations in that time include selling more units than exist, owners being unable to book a week they want and deceptive or fraudulent sales practices. Lately, La Jolla seems to be leading them in the running for the worst timeshare organization in Mexico.

I was inquirying about sunset world inparticular. We were given the email address of the person that sits with you and confirms your contract with you and when we got back and tried to email her, the email address does not exist. so after reading all these things online about sunset world., group, or what ever they have called themselves it made us think that perhaps people are right. why would someone give us their email address and it is not even correct from this company?

                          Completely Regreting buying

I had the identical story as the original post here! WOW! I can't even explain how much it shocked me to read what I have experienced. This sucks! I have now paid the entire thing off but can't go to visit but OHHH gotta pay the maintenance fee still. They also told me that the benefit of buying was that my fee for all inclusive would never go up. That was a lie too. Wish I could get out of it.

                            Bincal,

It is true that Sunset does not have a very good reputation online. If you let me know what did they promise you, I can tell based on my experience if you have been scammed or not.

                              Promises!

They promised us that they would rent out our appartment if we couldn´t use it, and they would pay us $500. Of course when we tried to do this they told us they do not rent out appartments, you have to advertise them through another company yourself, costing more money.
They also promised that they would always buy it back and we would probably make a profit, even showed us details of someone who´d done that just before. Another lie! Theý´re not interested in buying ours back despite constant phone calls and emails for years. By their own admission to me in an email....

Quote; ¨WE DO NOT HONOUR OUR VERBAL PROMISES!!¨

We´ve definitely been scammed and I am currently trying to warn as many people as possible to stay away from this company.
