  • Scammed by Royal Resorts aka Club Internacional de Cancun

I purchased a seven night vacation at The Royal Cancun during a timeshare presentation for Royal Resorts (aka: Interval Servicing Co, Club Internacional de Cancun ). Upon returning home from vacation 5 days later, I went online and discovered I was charged double the rate to stay at this resort.
I immediately contacted customer service and cancelled my stay at The Royal Cancun and Contacted Visa to dispute the $375 down payment I was charged. I was assured by Royal Resorts that my account would be cancelled, I would owe nothing and receive my down payment back.
A month later I received a bill in the mail from Royal Resorts. I contacted customer service again and was assured it was only a mistake and I owed nothing, at this time they mailed a letter to me showing my account was closed and my account balance is $0.
I begin to think I am finally out of this scam until a month later when Visa calls to inform me that my down payment still has not been refunded. I call customer service again and again and keep getting the run around and am told someone will call me back (which never happened).
Upon my last call to customer service they finally tell me they have no plans on refunding the down payment I made. I now have to go through the Better Business Bureau to try to get my money back from this scam. Please beware Royal Resorts cares nothing about there customers and only about ripping people off!!

    Hi Scammed,

perhaps I can give you some advice if you provide me with more information. for example, How and when did you request the cancellation and refund of your monies? this information is very important if you are looking towards receiving your down payment back. You can send me a message if you want to.

The Royal Resorts are one of the finest timeshare groups in the world. I formerly owned 6 timeshare weeks there. I would like to hear their side of the story. Your story doesn't say much and is rather vague about the cost for a week. You say you made a downpayment of $ 375 for a week stay--then you say you found out after you got back that you were charged double. What did you pay and what is the rate you say you paid double for. If you do not respond I may have to assume that you are just someone who got thrown out of the resort for bad behavior and you are just trying to make them look bad.

I purchased a 7 night vacation package for The Royal Cancun Villa type B (aka Club Internacional de Cancun , Interval Servicing Co) from Royal Resorts at a timeshare presentation while vacationing at the Royal Solaris in Cancun on June 09,2011 for $1500.
I cancelled the vacation package on June 14,2011 after returning home and finding out the average rate to stay at The Royal Cancun Villa type B is $125 per night.
The last excuse from Royal Resorts of why they will not refund my $375 down payment is because I initialed a contract with non-refundable hidden in the fine print.
However, if you know the federal law in Mexico it states that any vacation or timeshare package purchased while in Mexico and cancelled in writing within 5 days is to be FULLY refunded regardless of any contract. This law was made to protect consumers from scams like this one.
I have contacted The Federal Consumer Protection Commission (Profeco) and I am hoping they can get my money back from this scam!! By the way I love your cat!!!

I'm not sure what the current resort rates are, but $ 1,500 is not that high- particularly for a beachfront unit. I don't recall renting any units at the old VCI, but $ 1,000 was about the rate I got for the RC or RM ten years ago. Now with maintenance fees around $ 1,000, $ 1500 sounds about right for the rental rate the resort would charge(think of like the rack rate at hotels). Also, rates vary based on the time of year---from near Christmas until May the rates are the highest and $ 1,500 would be a bargain for Xmas week or presidents' week.
It sounds like your problem is more technical about the date of cancellation rather than a scam. If you want a scam- try the Sunset Group in Cancun who have a rich history of unhappy customers.

The one time I had a renter cancel- they got back only what I got for a last minute re-rental and if I couldn't have rented it at all they would have not gotten any refund.

I will agree that $1500 is not that bad of a price to stay a week in a fine resort.
The Royal Cancun was built in the 1970's and does not have nearly as many amenities or the luxury of most resorts in Cancun today, that is why the average rate is $125 per night.
I am sorry I have to disagree with you that this is not a scam because I feel that any time a company will not return my calls or emails, makes false promises, and will not refund my money as required by law, they are most certainly running a scam!!!

I am happy to say that making my experience know has paid off even though it upset those whom had a great experience with Royal Resorts. My money was refunded on Aug 31,2011. We all make mistakes even the people at Royal Resorts. The important thing is they made it right!!
