What is the Cancun Airport like? We may need to spend a couple of hours there coming and going? It has been 20+ years since we were last there.

It's been over 10 years for me and there were shops, bars and snack bars with lots of seating then.

We were last there a couple years ago. The airport has expanded a lot in the last few years and is now the busiest airport in Mexico for International travelers. There are 3 terminals. Commericial flights from the US use the new terminal 3. It is pretty nice with stores, restaurants, etc. Our last 2 trips to Cancun used terminal 3.
Be forewarned that when you arrive, you will be bombarded by people trying to sign you up for timeshare presentations. They will offer you free transportation for signing up. They hit you right after you clear customs. Just ignore them.

I stopped going around 7 years ago, in part due to the really long, annoying, unpleasant airport experience. Most of the delays/problems are on arrival, but still I would leave lots of time for departure too.

We must of lucked out when we went through CUN. Our experience was pretty good and fast. As usual we ignored the timeshare peddlers and headed to Avis for our car. Driving through the city of Cancun for the first time was not too bad. We had one roundabout that I ended up going the wrong direction but as luck would have it we ended up finding Costco and Mega.
