Yup, looks bad. I was reading that the airport is close and the area where the locals shack up near the airport is wiped out.

Cabos San Lucas Trip
We were booked to stay in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Sept 22-29, 2001. We stayed on the third floor at Sol Mar Beach Club Resort; we enjoyed the sunshine of Mexico. We were unaware of hurricane Juliette and it was heading for Cabo. On Sept. 26th and 27th, Juliette shifted directions to the northwest and then to the north. This brought the slowly weakening hurricane category 3, near the southern Baja California peninsula on the 28th. For almost two days, Juliette brought flooding rain, hurricane force winds and battering surf to the southern tip of Mexico's Baja peninsula. In Cabo San Lucas, a resort town of 25,000 at the southern tip of the Baja peninsula, the storm smashed docks, uprooted trees and power lines and left hundreds of people homeless...there were three reported deaths related to Juliette, including an American surfer who drowned in rough shore near Cabo San Lucas. Once it moved north over the Baja peninsula, the hurricane rapidly weakened. On Sept. 30, the storm dissipated. At Sol Mar Beach Club Resort, I watched as tiles of the roofs flew off. The ocean slam into the buildings -- the water from the ocean came into the main office, the pool was flooded with sand; by the next day you could walk on top of the pool and not know it was there. The next day was sunny and we started to assess the damage of the town. The bridge to the airport was gone. The airport was shut down. The town was in ruins. We were stuck there another week. Then the Sol Mar told us the damage was so bad they had to shut down. Lucky for us we had a 1+1 in the space bank, so RCI move us in the Playa Grande 2nd floor ocean front for the next week, For the next couple of days we walk around in shock. No tourists were spending money. The local people were buying all the groceries. The stores were running out of food. The government had to bring food in by ships. In all this chaos, Josie and I are walking by the marina and she frozee, I looked at her, then I saw this guy looking at her. Then she said Virgil and he said Josie it turn out they know each other in high school and he was living in Cabo San Lucas. He showed us around town, went out for a couple of meals. Ask if I wanted to go fishing, so we went to his apartment pick up a couple of butterfly nets and flashlights, went to the beach that night behind the Playa Grande and started catching sand crabs for bait. The next day we were fishing down the beach off the rocks behind Playa Grande we caught a couple of fishes, we took the fish to a restaurant, had them cook it for us. Great meal. If we would not have ran into Virgil to boost our spirits that trip would have been worst ever. I still love Cabo San Lucas and I have been back there since that trip. And I well return again.

Love Cabo! I feel for the people living there and tourists getting stranded. Hope things will get back to normal soon.

That looks really bad and will take time to get it back to the way it was. This is hard for the locals as tourism is their main livelihood, I believe. The locals have damage too to their houses and neighborhoods. Nature is out of whack as we have very hot and humid weather in southern California and it feels like we are in Puerto Vallarta right now.

Many of them are. I have read about Hilton, Worldmark, Grand Mayan and Grand Solmar in particular. Damage varies by location.

Thank you all for your support and concern for our guests and coworkers in our Cabo Hotels. We are glad to report only minimal damages, and thankfully everyone is ok. Our three Resorts remain a safe environment for everyone, with basic electric power (supplied by our generator) and water on the facilities. One of our Restaurants is fully operating and providing all the meals needed. The airport is not functioning and Cabo San Lucas is very damaged. However, The worst part is over so there's no need to worry.

The first relief flight landed this morning to start bringing in water, food, and support. It is expected that sometime tomorrow flights will begin to transport tourists back home. Looks like the Coral Baja has some damage.

Hurricane Odile Impacts WorldMark Coral Baja

The resort is recovering from Hurricane Odile with no injuries to guests or staff. There has been significant property damage that is still being assessed. The area airports are still closed, and the resort is currently not checking in new guests before Sept. 29. This is not good news, and will be following this closely as we have two back to back weeks at the Grand Mayan in March. Hopefully this will give them time to get things cleaned up, and the resort at least back to somewhat comparable pre-hurricane levels.

Here's a link that gives some good info. http://www.cabovillas.com/blog/?p=2547 The Grand Mayan suffered significant damage and is closed thru mid-November. In Mexican time that probable means it won't open again until at least next spring.

You must have read that on their own website, Pat, because I didn't see it mentioned here and I looked twice. You may be updated by the resort since you own at one of them. I found some more information here and they are not the official Mayan Palace or Vida Resorts.

I wonder how long it will take to have all the resorts operating again like before? It took a good year for our resort (Buganvilias Club) in Puerto Vallarta.

Update on Worldmark Coral Baja - closed until at least Feb 15. Here are 2 pics fron the airport. No way will it open by the end of the month.

I just read the long thread about Cabo on TUG. There is a ton of pictures, links and reports from people caught in it.

There was a lot of destruction. There has been very extensive looting and price gouging. A taxi dreiver was charging $500 US dollars to take you to the airport. It is very chaotic and disorganized with not much help from the resorts.

This is so different than Cancun and the Riviera Maya when hurricane Wilma hit in 2005. Hurricane Wilma was just as bad or worse but the resorts and locals handled it all very well and there was not wide spread looting nor chaos like in Cabo.

NBC morning news just reported that looting has broken out and the airport will be closed until next week.
