  • Resort Status in Cabos Grand Mayan

So I know this is dangerous question, but can anyone provide some accurate information on the status of this resort? Everything I am reading says TBD and that there was extensive damage with no likelihood they will open soon.. We have two weeks booked in March, and a gentleman from Vidanta states that they are re-opening on the first of January. If so, why are the other websites not posting this?

However he also went on to say that some of the restaurants will still be closed in addition to some pools. We are getting close to the point that if they do NOT re-open we will have no alternatives to go to.

I am sitting on the fence about whether or not to try and get something else, or hold my breath and take the plunge to see what happens. If you were in my shoes what would you do?

Can you book a hotel for a night as a backup and go check out the resort before you decide?
Most hotels let you cancel up until 6pm, maybe a Marriott if there is one nearby.
Worse case is you end up paying for one night and if it's unlivable then at least you're not dead in the water with no place to go.
I'd book for two weeks and then just cancel once you know things are safe.

Did you book your air with FF points or cash?
If FF you can usually change the return for free.
I've had to do that when things went wrong last minute like my ship sinking.

I'd say that if the resort people think they'll be open in January that you still have time to change to a plan B.
Personally I'm not sure I'd want to stay in a hotel without a restaurant for two weeks but since this is a timeshare
you'd at least have the kitchen that you could stock with chips and Margaritas.
I'm sure there's a Walmart nearby and yes Walmart in Mexico sells Tequila.

Look to see if you can get the Hacienda del mar, (Sheraton) Great resort and the whales hang out right in front of you at that time of year.

I checked the Owner Reservation website and there is one date available for check-in on February 21, so they must be planning for it to be open. There was only one date for March check-in and one date in April, so they must have moved a lot of people from fall 2014 to spring 2015.

We took the update tour in Nuevo last month and the salesman said they were taking advantage of the opportunity to make some changes to the resort while they were renovating the GM in Cabo San Joes. He did not say what those would be.

So I spoke with Vida customer service. Originally back in December they were saying January 1st. Now they are saying February 1st. No wonder they are one of the few resorts on the various websites I check that still say TBD. Non-committal if ever I have seen it.

I hVe a friend in Cabo right now....here is his post

Marc and I have been watching the repair work that is being done at Club Cascadas in Cabo San Lucas. What amazes me is the aftermath of the Hurricane Odile. The unit we will be occupying (thank you Chuck and Jane!!) is directly above the main restaurant and club house. It is and has been ready for occupancy for a few weeks now.
There are units further back in the development that appear to have suffered so much more damage than the front property. They are still working on those units and they will not be ready for weeks to come, but how this storm affected the various sections (which I thought would be more protected than they were!) is truly mind-boggling. And my mind is boggled!

I gave just posted to ask about Grand Mayan.

Edit, they are actually arriving tomorrow Thursday. They will be in touch if they find out anything. .

I did see a picture recently, but of course they showed before pictures which do not look promising. However also take it in context. If there are many buildings, and they are only showing one the rest of the buildings could have been repaired. What I have heard is about 50% of the units will be open. Not knowing the layout I would assume that they would be focusing on one building at a time and putting all effort into that.

                Michael -
Patricia, I am trying to find out more info on Grand Mayan. My understanding is that March may not happen, at least early March. The corridor was hit hard. Cascadas has a few buildings out of commission but the are working on them while we are here. Pueblo Bonito Blanco and Rose appear to be doing fine but ME and Nikki Beach, just next to Blanco, won't be opening for a LONG time.
