  • Best resorts in CABO?

    Hi all,

I submitted a request with SFX for a week in Cabo, August of next year... I wanted to make some specific resort requests just to make sure I get something that will be great! I was wondering which resorts you like best and why. Our interests include: restaurants, pools, on the beach (not for swimming, just views concierge, gym, etc.

I thought the Westin looked nice.. what do you think of that?

    Any advice would be great!!

Hi, Amanda! Of course, I have no idea about your preferences for Cabo. If you want to be near town, we really like Marina Fiesta. It's right on the harbor, but it's about 2 blocks from town, and can get noisy at night. That never bothered us. The Shrimp Bucket Restaurant is right next door, and the beach is a couple of blocks. It's also about 3 blocks from the Arambula Mercado, so you don't need a taxi for groceries. We used to own there, and also at Misiones, which is a ways up the Transpacific Hwy. It sits on a point, and the views are spectacular...but I think it's only through II. There are so many gorgeous hotels there. We prefer being closer to town. Sol Mar is another lovely resort, and not far.
A beautiful hotel further up the Hwy. is The Hacienda del Mar. We've walked around there, and it looks lovely. It's on the beach, too, and has beautiful pools.
If you haven't been there before, beware of the timeshare salespeople. They will tell you ANYthing, and they are merciless. Of course, many places in Mexico are just as bad. Good luck with your planning. Jean

Is Cabo americanized? Are there grocery stores to buy food at? Are there american restaurants?

We have owned at the Pueblo Bonito Rose since 1998 and we go there every year. It is our favorite resort because it's on the safe, swimmable beach and it's within easy walking distance to town. I would also recommend the Pueblo Bonito Blanco next door, and also the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. The latter is not within walking distance to town, but there's a free shuttle to the Rose. When you stay at any of the Pueblo Bonitos you can use the restaurants and facilities at all the others and charge things to your room.

I'd also recommend Playa Grande, which is close to town, but you can't swim in the ocean there because of dangerous surf.

There are many American restaurants in Cabo such as Burger King, Ruth's Chris Steak House, and Subway. There are two or three new grocery stores that would be comparable to U.S. stores. There's even a Costco.

There are a lot of good local restaurants, too, and among the ones we like are The Office and Mango Deck (both on Medano Beach), Baja Cantina just behind The Office at the Cabo Villas, the Stoplight on the main street, and Senor Sweets on the marina at the new mall.

You mentioned the Westin Regina, and it's a nice place. We have stayed there, but prefer to be in town rather than on the corridor where you really need a rental car.

Most people speak English and it's primarily a tourist town, very relaxing, and a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I had heard good things about Pueblo Bonita resorts.

Any suggestions closer to San Jose del Cabo? I am ok with staying on the Corridor, I like to spend most of the time at the resorts with a couple of day trips into town.

I own at Solmar We like it and Playa Grande. I also like both of the Pueblo Bonitos or CLub Cascadas, or the Finnestera. I have heard good things from friends on both the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar, and Club Regina at the Westin. The biggest drawback to both is location to town and since that doesnt bother you I think these both would be fine choices. There may be others but I have not heard enough to recommend them.

I feel the Playa Grande is one of the best locations.
Its one of the newest and its close to downtown Cabo
It takes 15 minutes to walk into town. The location makes one feel you’re far enough away from town to enjoy this resort. But close enough to every thing you would want to do.

It is also close to Marina Fiesta and Solmar, so one of these resorts would be the best location in my opinion.
What I once considered boring, I now consider paradise.

From other notes, you can probably tell the Cabo is very Americanized, which is either good or not-so-good, depending on ones' point of view. You asked about markets. There aren't many. The Arambula Mercado, near the launch ramp, on the Hwy. is the closest you'll find to a supermarket. You can find about anything you need there. It's in a little square, next to a pharmacy. When we're there, we mostly frequent Mexican restaurants, but there are American ones, too.

We stayed at the Westin in Cabo a few years ago and it is probably one of the most beautiful resorts we have ever stayed at. That said, the location can be a problem, especially for anyone who has difficulty getting around. The have little shuttles to take you from your unit to the pools or beach or anywhere else you need to go. We usually walked but it was a nice feature. Its about 40 minutes to Cabo San Lucas and 20 minutes to san Jose; either is an expensive cab ride. You can take the bus but it is a LONG walk to the bus stop.

                    Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach

We have owned at Hacienda Del Mar and Finisterra. Then we stayed at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach and bought on the spot! (Sold our other Cabo timeshares on ebay) It is a lovely resort carved into a hill on the Pacific Side of Cabo. Every room has an ocean view.

However the beach is absolutely not swimmable. However they have a pool right down at the beach and it is more interesting since they have a swim up bar where you can eat lunch, and imbibe your favorite drinks.

We have later found incredible deals for the small studios on ebay or Holiday Timeshares. The larger units do not come up too often.

                    It's a wonderful, relaxing place.

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion as how the Grand Mayan will be? I imagine it will be a great resort, not sure of the exact location. Any ideas if it will be in a location that is swimmable?

I believe it should open this fall some time. I hope construction is on schedule.

                        Thanks

                          Pueblo Bonito

I have to add that Pueblo Bonito was great. We have not been there for a few years but it was clean, grounds and pool were great and the service was excellent. they did not bug us for the hard sell either. Just watch out for the locals selling you stuff on the beach. Me and my budy found a way to stop them. We are going to make tee shirst that say "No Junk Please".
Dont forget to go to "The Office" its a bar on the beach. Everytime a client would call I would say I am at the office.

                              Cabo Resorts

For beach and activity, Medano Beach is the best. You can walk to town from there, you can enjoy many beach bars, and you can swim there (you can't on the Pacific side due to the currents). Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos built in 1991 and Pueblo Bonito Rose Spa & Resort built in 1997 are two of the best resorts to stay at.

Buy resale at PuebloBonitoResales.com It is definitely the way to go.

Close by is Edith's. It is upscale and not inexpensive, but wonderful food. Peacock's offers good food and a great environment. The Mango Bar on the beach is great for breakfast or an afternoon of relaxation plus games during happy hour.

There are also great restaurants at the Pueblo Bonito resorts.

                              Enjoy,

                              Tad
