  • Puerto Vallarta T/S Info

We are thinking of going to P/V next year and am looking for some info on the resorts there. I am not interested in the fanciest or extravagant but location more for me. I would prefer to walk to things rather than taking cabs and busses so if anyone can help me with resorts in town location rather than the outskirts it would be appreciated.

I think you should look into this place www.puertodeluna.com
rci6935 we have not stayed but are going to for a few days this Feb.
It looks nice to me, but as you say, not the fanciest.
it is "real mexico" looking and tropical lush.
ads say"The resort is located in the heart of the hotel zone--only three minutes from the airport and downtown Puerto Vallarta".

There is a Mayan Palace in PV and NV. We loved the one in NV which is bigger but away from the strip. The MP PV is on the beginning of strip and is with in walking distance to most things that you may want to see.

Sheraton Buganvillias is a great location - short walk to the downtown area. The Mayan Palace in Puerto Vallarta or Westin at the Marina are both really good too. Lots of nice restaurants at the Marina area and the last bus stop for the Hotel Zone is there. (So the first stop is there too.) Easy & cheap for transportation. You can't go wrong with any of these.

I vote for the Buganvilias too but we are biased because we own a timeshare there. No mandatory A-I fees here either but you can buy a package deal for a few days, I believe. I have some pictures of the Buganvilias in Picture Trail under my signature file.

There are many restaurants not too far away and there is the hotel bar to have something to eat very reasonably too or your favorite drinks and you can order room service too.

Public transportation is right in front of the hotel and several cyber cafes in walking distance too. They have a business center in the hotel but that is more expensive.

If you find anything in the marina area, then you cannot go wrong either but Nuevo Vallarta has the nicest beaches of all.

                  Non-tourist Puerto Vallarta

                  Jeff (I presume):

Maybe there is no area in PV that is really a "non-tourist" area, but we found the most authentic Mexican experience in the "Old Town" area, or the "Romantica Zone", south of the River Cuale. We found, when we visited them out of curiosity, that the timeshares around the Marina, the Hotel Zone, and close to downtown PV were generally very nice, but you were not in an area that was very "real" Mexican, but just busy, busy, busy. Old Town feels a bit off the beaten path, comparatively, yet there are numerous shops, restaurants, galleries, markets, etc. And the only real Mexican market in PV, full of hundreds of stalls and shops is located here along the River Cuale.

Here is a synopsis from the "Vallarta Guide" about the locale:

"Puerto Vallarta's most popular beach, Playa de los Muertos, is located just south of the malecon and the River Cuale. This beach is surrounded by the neighborhood of Olas Altas (Old Town or Zona Romantica), with it's indescribable variety of restaurants and shops. It is lined with beachfront hotels and restaurants and is usually bustling with activity, sun worshipers by day, the dining and nightlife crowd after dark. The beachfront bars and restaurants in this area are a great place to catch one of the incredible Vallarta sunsets."

There are a couple of timeshares located in this area, which we took a look at while we were there (o.k., but not great). But we were staying at the Playa del Sol Costa Sur, a 10-minute, 50 cent busride south of Old Town. It was kind of fun to get on the bus and, with no city traffic, be deposited in the heart of Zona Romantica. During our week there, we spent 3-4 days exclusively in that area, ventured into the downtown area, walked the Malecon, and looked at the timeshares in the hotel zone one day (that was enough!). We rented a car for two days and drove north to Nuevo Vallarta (no Mexican experience there, try Miami without the airfare) and further west and north to see some of the smaller towns along the Pacific.

Playa del Sol Costa Sur is right on the ocean. It has a beautiful plaza/pool/bar/restaurant, all sort of spaciously attached overlooking the sea. There are two wings--the North wing has all spacious studios with traditional Mexican decor, the South wing has 1 BR and & 2 BR units with more contemporary furnishings. Every unit has a deck looking out over the ocean. It was a great timeshare resort exchange (bonus week-II) we thought.

We also liked the camraderie of the owners, who apparently come back there year after year. Laid-back people who just want to relax and enjoy the pool, the happy hour, the really neat staff. We were welcomed and made some nice friends.

The housekeeping staff replaces linens every day, and they will even do your dishes for you! They are extremely polite. The front desk and customer service people couldn't be more friendly or helpful.

Bottom line is this: If you want a more real Mexican experience of PV, do not stay or spend significant time in the Hotel Zone/Marina/Downtown/Nuevo Vallarta. There are other timeshares near the Old Town area, Ochos Cascadas and Conchas Chinas which we visited. They are not on the beach, but in residential neighborhoods, and both are quiet and classy.

I suppose we just enjoy soaking up a bit more local color and culture than is provided by the predominantly touristy areas. But to each his own, and we did see some nice facilities in those other areas. Best of luck in finding a place that works for you and your family.

                  Buenos noches, DDI Par
