  • Help with Cancun resorts

Hi, all. I am attempting to put in a request for my sister and BIL with SFX (Mexico bonus week). I recommended they try for one of the Royals, but they looked at the website and thought they looked too kid-centric (they don't have any).

I directed them to the SFX website and they saw the Hyatt Cancun Caribe listed in the directory. They want to request it, but I cannot find any information anywhere about it. Actually, the only place I've seen it listed is in Frank's cancun updates. Apparetly it was closed for a long time and either reopened in September, or will open in December. I would appreciate any information anyone can share about this resort. Can anyone help?

Also interested in any feedback about how appropriate the Royals would be for a couple without children. Is there a different resort you would recommend for them?

I've never been to Cancun, so I am relying on you guys to help. TIA
    ~Arlene

As long as you got the experts looking, perhaps we can also make sure there are no problems with any of the resort entries in the database or none are missing:

A lot would depend on when you are going to go there- kids are plentiful when schools are out, but minimal the rest of the year. You will probably find more kids at the Sands than at the other Royals. The Grand Melia is nice on the active surf strip and the Westin is also a good choice. I've not mentioned the all-inclusive choices as I tend to avoid them in Cancun. I'm not at all familiar with the Hyatt mentioned.

I would also add the Omni to the ones on Tony's list. And fwiw, we were at the Royal Caribbean over Thanksgiving, and it was spread out enough that OPK (Other People's Kids) didn't bother us at all.

Well, it's been a month and no hits on their search. SFX recommended they add Mayan Palace to their list as they get a lot of weeks from them. I know I've heard nice things about it, but I am geographically challenged when it comes to Mexico. Is this in Cancun? It is not listed among the Cancun resorts here or on TUG, but the Grand Mayan is listed on the TS4Ms list of Cancun resorts, and I was pretty sure these were next to each other? I'm confused. Help.

Hi Arlene - thought I would butt in here and assist. The Mayan Resort in that region is approximately a 30 minute drive south of Cancun proper in an area called the Riviera Maya.

Many people prefer that area as it is away from the concrete jungle, noisy bars, disco's and those wonderful fast-food chains in Cancun proper. A lot will depend on their personal preferences as some people prefer the high-density style vacation.

The resort is wonderful with many amenities. It is only about a 15 minute drive from Playa Del Carmen, which I think is an absolutely incredible place (nearly bought a condo there).

For the most part, all timeshare resorts in Mexico are family oriented. However I have found with Mayan properties, their facilities, pools etc. are spread out of a large area, and have never really had a situation of being "overwhelmed" by crowds of kids in any particular area. I have found their resorts to be well balanced in that respect. Also a lot depends on what time of the year they want to travel. If it's when kids are on school break... then expect more families with their children taking a great vacation.

            Hope this helps...

Thank you, Mark. That does help. I will let my sister know and hopefully we will be able to add that resort to her list. Oscar was very helpful on the phone, by the way.

As an adult traveler, I can recommend the Royals in Cancun - I am going in February...I especially like the 'tri-royals' my fav being the Royal Caribbean.....

That said, I have traded into the Grand Mayan in Riviera Maya next February - and can't wait. I do believe the Mayan Palace is on the same property and you can use all the same facilities as the GM (this is not the case in Nueva Vallarta) I am sure they will enjoy this area and this resort.

We just returned Friday from MP & GM. GM are significantly better rooms, but both resorts share the same facilities. Some of the MP buildings are 1/2-3/4 mile from the pool, but they do have a shuttle. We were lucking with MP #4 & GM #1, so fairly close. Prices are a bit steep for most meals and store items. Standard taxi to Play Del Carmen is $18, but if you go out to the bus stop you can negotiate a $3-5 per person. The bus is $1.50 and drops you about 4 blocks from Walmart & 5th Avenue. If you go to the side door at Walmart, you can get a $15 ride back.

Royals are all nice, plus it's easier to go to other places in Cancun. Some places are within reasonable walking distances. Shorter taxi rides = less $$$, and the bus was $.60 last year.

Both resorts are equal in maintenance, staff, & cleanliness. Pool & fitness center much better at the Mayans. As Mark stated, a lot will depend on their personal preferences!
