What activities do you recommend in Cancun?

We'd like to visit the Ruins...

How about the Water Park, is it nice?

How about a dolphin swim, is it safe?

I worry about the water issues of Mexico, but was told that the resorts have very good water?

    Thanks!

I first would recommend you take Brant Bostons 2 for 1 diner entertainment card for $15. There are some good and fun places to eat. Shopping is nice but I be careful when buying Silver. I found that the quality there was not as good as PV. We went to Xcaret and was disappointed. That does not mean it is not recommended. We got there late and missed the times to do the Dolphin Swim, And the deep sea walk. It is very expensive there since what ever you want to do you must pay extra on top of the price of Admission. Just so you know, All of the ruins are sort of far away so it will cost you to get there. There are water toys located on your strip that you may want to do.

There are some minor ruins right in the hotel zone. El Rey is right near the golf course (the one near the tri-Royals). Brant can also get you reservations for the Dolphin swim at La Isla- as Frank found out it's iffy at Xcaret. The water in the hotel zone is purified. For ruins, Tulum is the closest and on the shore, but Chitzen Itza is much larger and inland (and hot).

I don't believe in dolphin swims, but if you like to snorkel, I would recommend you rent a car and head to Yalku or other lagoons and even a cenote or two. There's also a really fine cave system called Aktun Chen, south of Cancun on the Cancun-Tulum hwy. Don't know about the water park.

It's fun to go to Isla Mujeres for a day trip...ask at your hotel's front desk which bus to take to the ferry dock. Of course the resorts in Cancun will keep you very busy with onsite activities, particularly the Royal Resorts that exchange via II. Have fun!

I second the trip to Isla Mujeres. There is even a trip that includes a stopover at the island and snorkeling. While the trip to Chitzen Itza does take a while to get there, the ruins are a must see IMHO. I understand they don't allow climbing on the pyramids anymore though.

I would really love to do some snorkeling!

            But I'm afraid of sharks

I would really like to find a lagoon type place, versus open water.

            Any shark attacks in Mexico?

After watching Jaws as a child, I didn't want to swim in my pool!

The only sharks I've heard mentioned off the Mayan Riviera were in very deep water off Cozumel. There are Barracuda tho, so if you want to play it extra safe, don't hit the water with gold or silver on. Yalku, that Carol mentioned is a lagoon type with shallow clear water.

I have used his airport service and used his 2 for 1 card. I did do 1 of his tours but if you are renting a car it might comeout cheaper if you drive there on your own.

Brant has the cheapest tour prices that I have seen and I suspect the only way you could beat them by doing it yourself is if you have 4 or more people involved. We did rent a car once to go to Xcaret, but that was so we could get there early enough to reserve a Dolphin swim and not for frugality.

If you would like to snorkel in a lagoon, I would recommend Xel-Ha, www.xel-ha.com. It is very beautiful, and there are several package tours from Cancun. We were in Cancun in August and really had a great time at Xel-Ha. Our four year old even snorkeled while wearing a life vest which they provide.
It is near Tulum, so some of the tours include it as well. Since my husband and I had been to Tulum before we didn’t bother to take the tour this time. It may have been too much for a single day. The ruins at Tulum are pretty since they are by the seaside, but are much smaller than some of the other Mayan sites.
Thanks to my sister, we own a leg lamp.
