We leave on Friday, and I've gotten really nervous. I took the advice from several people on TA and booked a car rental thru Dominic. My husband is sure we'r going to be ripped off, but I'm more trusting. Anyone here have any experience with Dominic? I think anything has to be better than spending an hour at the chain rental counters.

He just worries. This close to travel time he always comes up with a bunch of ideas that maybe I should have thought of. Of course, since I make all the travel plans, I've either already done it, or rejected his idea in favor of something else. I think he's just reminding me that he can plan too. Right.

Don't forget to register your trip with the U.S. State Department. In case of emergency, they can reach you, and in case of evacuation, you'll already be on the list of Americans in the area that need help."You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity." I just posted this on Trip Advisor; I think lots of Americans forget to do it, and sometime, it could save your life.
To register a trip outside the U.S. with the U.S. State Department takes only about 5 min. You can do it on line. They ask for only your passport number, an address where you are going, and the names and passport numbers of the people you are traveling with. Should there be an emergency where Americans need to be evacuated, the State Department then knows how to contact you. If someone desperately needs to contact you, the State Department knows how to do it. In the event of a hurricane, etc., if they don't know where you are, you are left with trying to find out where they are and adding yourself to the list of Americans they are compiling; it's much better, in my opinion, to be on the list to start with.

If there is a U.S. Consular Agency where you are going, it's good to know where it is; they cannot circumvent local authorities, even if they are corrupt, but they can offer you more aid than you are going to get anywhere else: advice, names of lawyers, transfer of money and goods to you while you are in jail, etc.

We just got back from Cabo, and Dominic was great. We rented an expedition from him for $700 for the week. The only problem we had was the car broke down in Cabo on the way back from Todos Santos on Thurs. The construction between the 2 cabos was terrible and it took his mechanic about 1 1/2 hours to get there. The car couldn't be fixed right then, cause it was about 7PM. My husband said to just return them to the t/s and we'd talk in the AM. DH talked to him the next day, and requested 300 of the 700 be refunded. Dominic agreed, and said he'd meet us at the airport on Saturday. We all thought - Right!! Saturday came, and the airport came and Dominic came and peeled off 300 without batting an eye. He apologized over and over, and we had a very nice chat.
Would I rent from him agoin?? In a heartbeat!!!!!!! The service at the apirport picking up the car was great, he took care of the problems we had, and he stood by his word. Even my suspicious DH was impressed.

insurance and car vs tour
What is the best way to do the rental insurance? Our local AAA will not write a policy for Mexico driving, but I noticed that the AAA in some western states will.
We're at the Grand Mayan San Jose del Cabo for 10 days in December. From there, which are the most likely tourist destinations that are best visited by car? We tend to like to go at our own pace and not join tours, but is it better for personal safety to join tours in Baja California?
thanks

If you are an American Express cardholder, I would suggest checking out the AMEX plan: https://www152.americanexpress.com/f...al/coverage.do
