I had booked with the car rental that is across the street from the Royals. I had booked the cheapest car at the time. I put $50 in the agents hand when I pivked it up and got a mini van out of it.

I have never rented a car in Mexico....

Is this additional coverage for $0 decuctible recommended or is it a
      a rip off???

You are taking a significant risk without additional insurance on a rental car in Mexico. The $8 vs. $15 is up to an individual's willingness to accept the $600 risk.

          biskits--

I did quite a bit of research on renting a car in Cancun and decided on Caribbean Rent a Car -- the website is Cancun Rent a Car, Cancun Airport Car Rental, Caribbean Rent a Car.

For the week you want, in a compact, it is $288. You could get a midsize for $324. What is good about this company is that everything is included as well as zero deductibles. The zero deductibles are the difference here.

The insurance (probably) included at no cost on your Mastercard/Visa on a rental vehicle in Mexico is zero deductible. However, you must decline the car rental company's insurance (other than 3rd party liability) in order to activate the credit card company insurance.

We use the credit card insurance for the vehicle and purchase Mexican 3rd party liability, which covers damage to others or their property. The total damages collectible in Mexico (even for loss of life or total disability) is $8,000 per person. The standard 3rd party liability policy is $32,000 to $35,000, which means you can kill 4 people and have it covered with the standard liability insurance.

I had a car reserved through Dollar, and their terms stated that CC coverage was [B]not[B]accepted in Mexico. I made a reservation with Caribbean Rental instead. Rate was about the same as Dollar with insurance, but they include two extra drives in the price.

I rented with Thrifty for a week last November, thought I had a great deal for $80 for the week but then the mandatory Liability nearly doubled it.

That's why I like Avis: 3rd party liability is included in the quote they give you--no surprises.
