  • Verizon cel service in Mexico

Is it worth calling Verizon and paying to make my phone work in Mexico for a week? It sounds like it would be about 30 bucks, plus you get less minutes...and the big catch is that it then extends your phone contract by a new two years. (I guess you deactivate the "North America plan" once you return, but the contract extension is a done deal....)

Thanks for any help with this!

If you plan on using it then Yes. My family and friends used it a lot and had Verizon but they needed to call out. I had the best deal with Sprint, Only a $4 charge for the month and only 50 cents a Min. If you are changing plans speak to a supervisor as my BIL had received different information from Verizon's reps.

      Thanks Frank.

After talking with yet another person, I've learned that my phone will work in Mexico without me switching plans. It costs a lot ($.69/minute plus whatever the local company charges) but will be good for any emergency situation to know I have a phone.

Verizon told me that, too, for my trip to Puerta Vallarta and my phone DIDN'T work!

Pat you were in NV not PV. I am sure it would have worked in PV. All of my friends and familys phone worked but mine worked better as they sometimes lost there bars. In Cancun I am pretty sure Verizon has a piece of the pie there and it should work.

Have fun and go to Carlos and Charlies.

Hi, I was just in PV and NV and my whole families' verizon phones worked. You don't have to change your plans, but you just have to tell them to turn on international calling. Also, you have to press some numbers before you get to Mexico. I forgot what it is, something like *228.

              laptop phoning

If you're bringing your laptop and buying internet time or are lucky enough to have access try www.skype.com
You can prepay and pay pennies (on top of your internet fees) for land-line hookups around the world or talk directly to someone else with Skype for free. A mike/earphone headset is a good idea especially in noisy bars.
We were in Cabo in January and found a friendly cafe which charged about 30 cents/minute for NA calling - it was voice over internet.

Pat...FYI...my Verizon cel service did not work in Cancun. My phone said it was roaming, but I was unable to place any calls.

Same thing....don't know why - I know it won't work in Aruba.

Did you dial it correctly? 001 in front of the number and then the area code without the 1 and the number.

Yup...tried it that way and the "normal" way. (Verizon had told me just to dial the area code and number, but at the hotel they told me to use 001. Neither worked.)

Maybe that was my problem or maybe not- I tried calling Sharon this morning and couldn't get through.
