Cheap way to PHONE HOME from Cancun?

Verizon roaming is 69cents minute plus plus...
Since my wifes dad and my mom are both 86... we need to check in daily...
Any cheap phone cards or ???

Pay as you go Phone. Check Bestbuy, Walmart, etc. You want a phone that will work in that area, but no plan contract and no big charges.

Sounds like maybe you can get one in states for calling home with cheap rates but I am not sur eof that as you may still have to go thru Mexico satellites etc..and they charge....

Think many providers in states offer international calling if you are on a plan , you may want to check around..

if you have Vonage you can take your vonage box with you and plug into any highspeed internet connection and make and receive call just like youi are home and for the same price.

The rules vary by location and often phone cards purchased in the US will not work on a given island. In fact, sometimes cards purchased on the island will not work on all phones there. Some are only good on home phones; others for only some brands of pay phones; yet others only work with a certain brand of cell phone, etc.

A lot of people have resorted to text messaging just to do daily check-ins etc. while traveling in the Caribbean. Usually quite a bit less expensive than calling.

When we were near Cancun last year, many of the taxi drivers and TS reps had Mexican cell phones with unlimited North America calling plans meaning it didn't cost more to let us use their phones.

Can you use SKYPE on a laptop as another alternative?

ah yes you can use skype!!!

Those in Mexico with the unlimited North America calling plans are on plans here in Mexico and that would not be feasible nor possible for a tourist.

We have been able to use our Nextel/Sprint 2 way the last 3 time in Cancun.

If we dial a number and "call" it is very expensive, but the 2 way, walkie talkie worked as part of our regular contract. (No extra charge)
