I just received a Text Message from Emmy who is currently in Mexico. What are the charges for texting from Mexico to the US or Texting to Mexico from the US? I do not think there are extra charges is There? If not texting might be the way to go rather than calling.

We were just in the Dominican..I have AT&T..$2.00/minute to call....50 cents to text. My SIL has Verizon .50 to send- .05 to receive.
I just checked both AT&T and Verizon for Mexico, the same charges apply.
I plan on using skype for my next trip and only use my cell for 'emergency' calls.
From Mexico, to call the US - AT&T requires u dial "00" then 1 and the 10 digit number.
Verizon only requires 1 then the 10 digit number.

Originally posted by jericapI know from the Dominican I used to dial the country code, but last week I only dialed 1+ area code and it worked great. I have AT&T.
What I did find was that 3 out of 4 Verizon reps I spoke to on the phone did NOT know how to dial from Mexico...you could tell they were 'reading' from some info.
The rep that we got who gave us the correct information spoke confidently and KNEW you didn't have to dial anything except the "1" before the 10 digit number....so if u r traveling out of area.....be sure to confirm the info with 2-3 different employees.

With AT&T there are no additional charges to receive texts in mexico if you have an existing plan (I get 200 per month with my iphone and am always way under), it was $.20 to receive if out of plan. I told DH to text me and I'd go to a wifi spot and email back, and used skype for calls. If you are used to texting conversations it could add up as much as phone charges (I got 6 texts in 3 minutes from a friend who is).
The iphone also has a magical feature where it automatically adds the country numbers, so I just dialed like normal.
