Universities warn students to avoid Mexico for spring break...
That's only because students are likely to be engaginging in activities that bring them into contact with the "unsavory" aspects of life: drugs and drug dealers.
For most of us, that's not a factor.

Apparently the drug cartels are having a war and offing many area officials. (Cops, Judges, etc) My friends were just there and were STRONGLY warned NOT to leave the hotel zone. The resort said they could and would not vouch for their safety outside the "zone". Even the cartels know the value of tourism!!!!! If you plan to hang out and relax in the hotel zone you "SHOULD" be OK. If you wanted to leave the zone and immerse yourself in the culture I would reconsider!
What about the tours to various Mayan Ruins, etc.?
Do them. You are with other tourist most of the time, and there is pretty good safety record. It is much different if you were to wander off to some dark alley or out of the way bar or even a restaurant by yourself than to visit major tourist area with dozens of others in your group. Safety in numbers and in daylight.

Just my 2 cents....

Yep, the Mexico I know and love. Not. I'm sorry it's hit Cancun.
To the OP, and on a lighter note, I would sooner avoid Cancun while the students are visiting during spring break By May, they should be gone.

This was reported this morning on the news segment of the Today Show.
A work friend of DH just returned from a Presidents Week Trip to Cancun - and armed police/troops were everywhere.
They did not feel comfortable.
That said, I would be comfortable myself going and staying at the resort - taxi, not public buses at night, using common sense ..... but I would be concerned if I was sending a young adult for a Spring Break trip.
As a person who lives in Rosarito (just south of Tijuana), we're glad to see the armed military presence: where they are, the cartels aren't. Seeing a military presence is reassuring and should not be cause for concern.
Even so, sending the "young and foolish" to these areas isn't a good move in my opinion.

I have been trying to reassure myself that my trip to Puerta Vallarta in June will be fine.
I work for the State of Texas and they agency sent a notice to all employees that we are not to go to Mexico (this involves Texas/Mexico Border) for any business meetings with our mexican counterparts - all business is to be conducted via phone.
Between that and the media coverage, it makes me a little nervous.
We are staying at Rancho Banderas and are planning to get a shuttle to the resort with a stop at a grocery store on the way and then pretty much hanging out at the resort. I keep telling myself it will be fine but can't help searching the exchange companies for something in the carribean.
I haven't bought plane tickets yet so there is still time to bail......
Remember, whether you travel to Mexico by land, air, or sea,
you are entering a foreign country and are subject to the laws
and customs regulations of Mexico.
Use only the licensed and regulated "sitio" (SEE-tee-oh) taxis.
Hotels, clubs and restaurants will summon a sitio taxi upon request.

We were four weeks in Mexico in Jan/Feb in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta and felt very safe but I read on TUG that there was a murder not too far from were we were.
We live in the Los Angeles area and wonder how many murders we have here? You have crime and murders everywhere so be careful.
More negatives on going to Mexico this morning on the news - CNN.
Yeah, I've been hearing a lot of negative news and warnings regarding travel to Mexico as well. I wonder if that's why there's such an usual amount of Mexico available this winter in II?

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.
