Cinco de Mayo - Cancun

Has anybody been? I am thinking about a trip during this week. any suggestions?

Cancun starts getting really hot in May and there's a great chance that sea lice will be in the water. I've never been there for Cinco de Mayo, but have been there just up to and May 5 will see lots of celebration and a parade on the hotel zone main drag.

We check in on 5/1/10. It didn't occur to me that included cinco de mayo until I saw your post. Thanks. I got this from a Cancun website:

However, I thought I'd include an entry about it though as many people expect parties and fiestas in Cancun when that's not the case.

In fact, Cinco de Mayo is far more widely celebrated in the US than it is in Mexico.

It does, of course, have Mexican origins though. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. In Mexico though it is only truly commemorated in the state of Puebla where the victory took place."

In America, we celebrate victory over the taco and beer.

We do like to celebrate. We make a big deal of Cinco de Mayo, St. Pats day and a few other holidays that didn't start in America, but we take advantage of them, or better said, we celebrate them.

I will be checking in 05/02/2009. Pending approval from work and Air staying as low as it is until it is approved. Where will you be staying?

We went the end of September 08 and was hot but great at night. No hurricanes and TONS of mosquitos. Thankfully no Sea Lice. I am not sure what that is but sounds Gross (I think I remember them in Survivor). I will have to do a google search on them.

The good news is no big celebrations. This trip is for TOTAL R&R. Only plan for this trip is Chichen Itza. All other days I will test the boundries of my appetite and enjoy as many Sol's as possible. Lay by the pool and maybe a little snorkeling and a Good Cigar.

I have on hold right now LeBlanc Spa Resort. I hope to have it all booked tomorrow.

Cancun is one of the Mexican cities most coopted toward the U.S. and less like Mexico. Because Cinco de Mayo is essentially a U.S. holiday (not a Mexican one, as some people think), I think that the best chance of having a celebration in Mexico of a faux-Mexican U.S. holiday is probably better there than elsewhere.

But I'd probably pick a city like Boston or L.A. (Olvera St.) if you really want to celebrate the day.

If you're looking to celebrate Mexican Independence Day, the date is September 16, which is celebrated quite widely and vigorously in Mexico.

We are going to be in Cancun from May 23-30, 2009. Do we need to be concerned about sea lice?

You betcha ! Most cases occur from March to August, but the incidence peaks in May and June.
If you haven't been exposed before and have no serious allergies the effect may be negligible. Our first year, we were unaffected even though everyone else was getting stung. Our second year's exposure brought on itching, bumps and actually changed our immune systems (got poison ivy for the first time that summer) for a couple of years. We started going to Cancun other than in season and ended that problem- except for a 2002 trip in March when we got a couple of stings near the end of the month and spent the last 3 days of that trip out of the ocean

Cinco de Mayo is definitely Mexican and is not a US holiday. However it is not widely celebrated in Mexico like it is in parts of the US. I have been to many of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations in various cities in California, Reno NV, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson, Nogales, etc. The biggest celebrations were in San Diego, San Jose, and Nogales Son Mexico. These places always celebrate it on the closest weekend and it lasts for both days.

There are many holidays celebrated in May in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is not really celebrated here, but there is A workers day, a day of the cross and also Mothers day which is May 10 here and another holiday on May 25 but can't remeber its roots.

I really have no clue why in Mexico we do not celbrate Cinco de Mayo, as it seems we celbrate everything else....LOL. Lot of holidays! or fiestas!
