  • Shootout kills 16 in Mexico's Acapulco resort

ACAPULCO, Mexico – A military official says 15 gunmen and a soldier were killed in a two-hour shootout in the heart of Acapulco's hotel zone.

The army colonel who led the battle against the gunmen says the shootout erupted when the military received a tip about the presence of armed men at a house in the hotel zone.

He says the gunmen opened fire with assault rifles and about 50 grenades on soldiers who arrived at the house. The soldiers found four Guerrero state police officers inside the house who said they were being held captive by the gunmen.

The colonel led reporters through the scene early Sunday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of security reasons.

The gunbattle started Saturday night and went on past midnight.

Wow, reading this you could assume that no hostages or bystanders were hurt. We need SWAT teams like this.

Headlines like this just drive me crazy! This is the kind of thing that scares tourists away. It said a house in the hotel zone. No resort was mentioned - just house, but the headline makes you think it was at one of the resorts. There was also no location with proximity to specific resorts.

A newer version of the article says that it was an area that has become run down but was once the favored area of Hollywood guests. We have been taken to a restaurant in that area when going on city tours. I think it was John Wayne's favorite place in Acapulco. The area is run down and there are mostly private homes. It is near the cliff diver area.

I wonder if other countries headline the things that happen in the U.S. the way the U.S. headlines things that happen in Mexico. Somehow I doubt it.
