Define "Acceptable"
The Grand Mayan is certainly a beautiful resort that everyone loves. My wife and I don't care for it because it is too far from town. So for us, it is "unacceptable."
I think you might want to rephrase your questions to see what resort people like in PDC.
Again, there are many fabulous resorts in the area, but not in the city. Do you want in the city (where you can walk to everything) or out in a mega resort where you have to take a shuttle around the resort and an expensive taxi ride to town???

I am interested in a nice resort that is close to town. If folks have their favorite, I would like to know.

We stayed at Playacar Palace ( a Palace Resort) right near fifth ave., which was very convenient. We could just walk over to shop, roam around and were also close to the ( sorry chemo brain) pier you can take boat over to Cozumel, can't think of name of it.....ugh!
The resort and service were great.........though it is an AI, if thta is not up your alley then this will not work , otherwise I highly recommend it.

Royal Haciendas
How far is Royal Haciendas from town? How is the best way to get there from the Cancun Airport and the best way to get around once you are there.? What groups give tours out of Royal Haciendas?

Sorry for delay in answering...just back from week in Palm Beach....You can arrange transportation from Cancun to RH thru RH, or here: Playa del Carmen - Airport Transfer Reservation
RH is one of closest timeshare resorts to Playa and they have hourly shuttles to Playa, which is only about a 10 minute ride. All tours are also available thru guest services at RH. For things to do in around Playa, restaurant and beach reviews etc, spend some time on Playa del Carmen info
There are some local tours on this site that we have enjoyed:
Playa del Carmen - Anna James Sea Cenote
Additional info on Playa can be found at:
http://www.cancunmap.com/
Hope this helps....let me know if I can be of any further assistance...

Be sure to get a map from Laura - the map chick MapChick's travel tips to get great information about the area - see my post about her restaurant recommendations.
And check the round trip transpo from tonyg friends Brant Boston www.entertainment-plus.net - very fair prices.
Prices are per VEHICLE in US Dollars.
Look for our USA Transfers staff. Easily identifiable by the Logos and hat.

Resorts in and near Playa Del Carmen
New to this forum, however, there are two resorts that I've been in that are fairly close to Playa Del Carmen (PDC). In order of their distance form PDC they are the aforementioned Playacar Palace which is also now cobranded with Wyndham which is a 3 minute walk from PDC. The next resort south is the Sunset Fisherman's which is about a 12 minute walk from PDC. To the north you get the Royal Playa Del Carmen (RPDC) which is a adult only resort and is in town although north of the Ferry pier. Playacar Palace and Sunset Fisherman's are in what is called the Playacar Phase I gated development. It's a nice quiet area with some small Mayan ruins. Further south there are a number of large resorts.
The Playacar Palace is a very large resort but is very luxurious. The Sunset Fisherman's is a small resort, just 65 units. The Playacar AI is fairly expensive and pays for all meals. The Sunset Fisherman's pays for breakfast and either lunch or dinner and is fairly cheap. I believe the RPDC AI charge is expensive but am not certain having never stayed there.
Beyond these there are a number of Mega-Resorts at varying distances outside of town. There are also 5 or 6 or more resorts further south from town in Playacar Phase I.
