I felt that the Grupo Mayan sales presentation I endured in May 2010 (Riviera Maya, Mayan Palace) was a disgrace. I was fed more lies than truths. It lasted 6 hours and included alcohol which is really not appropriate.

When I got home and was able to research Grupo Mayan, it was too late - the 5 day rescission period had passed. Now I know I overpaid for a poor vacation product. I am trying to get out of this terrible contract and leave the timeshare world far behind, forever.

This Happens in the USA Too!

Read your petition here and on TUG. I agree with the car salesman analysis for timeshare purchases.

We went to our first presentation back in 1983 where bought, but that night, I read everything in the packet that we were given and we went back to the sales office and rescinded the next day. This was in the USA - not Mexico. The things they told us were not in the contract and many things were not true when you read the small print.

We have owned timeshares since 1991 and bought a few from developers and most from eBay once we decided where we wanted to go. Just know that you must read the contract while you are sitting there and ask questions and make sure what they say is included in the contract. "He who has the paper wins!" If it is not in the contract, you do not have it!

I am sorry that you feel "burned" by the Groupo Mayan sales team, but you must take some responsibility for not double-checking and reading all the fine print while you were still there.

We love Grupo Mayan resorts and own a total of 6 weeks. We do not go to the owner updates any more because they just want us to spend more money on the newest and best. We are happy with what we have.

Welcome to the world of retail sales

This is common, it is like gambling in Vegas, free drinks to lower your inhibitions, no clocks so you don't realize how long you have been there, and high pressure sales tactics.
But really, you went there on your own, you accepted the bribe of the free gift or the cash payout, did you expect that they were just throwing money away?
When ever you enter a sales negotiation, you must remember that they have one goal, to take your money for their product, period. It doesn't matter if it is a stereo, a hot tub, a car, or a timeshare, and you need to be prepared with the facts prior to entering this arena.

You actual bought a pretty good timeshare, you of course paid retail which is more than it is worth on the resale market, but like anything new, it drops in value as the ink drys on the contract.

I hope for your sake that this public display of outrage gets you out of the contract, but in the future please try not to allow yourself to enter these types of attractive traps.

        fwiw,

        Greg

The Grand Mayans are our favorite resorts having spent 10 weeks at them. We are NOT owners but have exchanged to them through SFX. We never have attended a sales presentation but have definitely heard the horror stories about them. We don't do sales presentations period.

Though you had a bad experience, you do have a good product albeit very expensive. I seriously doubt you will be able to get out of the contract. Instead, learn all you can about how to use and enjoy it. You can get tons of info on this site.

As I am sure you are aware, the Grand Mayans are very easy to exchange into through SFX.
