I attended a VIDA presentation in San Jose del Cabo last week. It sounded like Groupo Maya is being replaced by VIDA. Whats up with this ?

WOW! I attended it last week too! Made $300 CASH USD, had a free buffet breakfast, and did not buy anything! I think the sales staff VERY frustrated with me. Like I cared about that. The resort was very nice though.

VIDA is just another name for Grupo Maya, aka - Mayan Resorts.

I find it interesting as when we bought originally in February 1999, it was Vidafel. Then it was Sea Gardens by Vidafel, and just Mayan Palace. When they added Grand Mayan, they started using Mayan Resorts, then Grupo Mayan, and recently they call it VIDA. We get mailings for VIDA Vacations.

The maintenance fee bills say Mayan Resorts.

We recived $400 usd, breakfast, 2 blankets and a bottle of medicore tequilla.
            1. prequalification - They wanted owners of other resorts.
They were showing us the Lux model in SJD.

            2. Breakfast with a presenter. Top of the line breakfast with omlet bar.

            3. Tour of the Lux with qualifing questions.

            4. Sit down to discuss ownership.
The new area north of SJD called Playita is being developed by VIDA. Another area close to the USA border is being developed and includes an international airport.

            5. The see what we can sell your timeshare for and pricing for the Lux, with Lux benifits.

            6. Sales manager shows you prices and tries to sell other inventory such as Grand Mayan.

            7. Leave for gift and sit down in a different area where a different presenter shows Mayan Palace inventory. With this one you buy in and pay MF for as many weeks as you want. The only thing about this is it is a situation that the inventory of these units may or may not be available and you could get stuck in the Sea Garden.

            8. No Thanks and off for gifts. Get the money and grab blankets and tequilla on the way out.

With breakfast it took 2 hours.

FYI - the place near the USA border is Puerto Penasco - aka Rocky Point. Since we live on the west side of Phoenix, we can drive there in less than 4 hours.

Right now, they just have Mayan Palace units there. They have some full-ownership condos that are not on the beach and built the airport. I am not aware of any regular flights going there - at least they are not advertised here in Phoenix. They have been working to build a Grand Mayan there since the first time we visited in 2007.

They have hundreds if not thousands of acres and have long range plans to build 2 more golf courses - if not an entire city.

Yes - Puerto Penasco or Rocky Point as folks in Arizona call it or La Jolla de Corte's as Vida calls it, is on the Sea of Cortez. Check out Google Maps - Google Maps

If you check the Vida Vacations site, the corporate history is spelled out clearly. The owner is Grupo Vidanta at this time, which is spearheaded by Mexico's most prominent real estate developer.

My understanding after the earthquake in Puerto Vallarta caused their resort buildings to collapse years ago, Vidafel was upset about all the jokes "Vida FELL in Puerto Vallarta" and they changed the company name. Vida = life. So now that few remember the PV earthquake and the structures have been replaced, it is ok to use Vida again.

We have been there several times since we moved to Phoenix in 2007. We have reservations for October 2012. As with many MP/GM locations, it is out by itself on a large stretch of beach. The water is very calm and kids love the tide pools. Since we drive there, the location is not an issue and we drive into "town". PP is a small town and shrimping is one of the main occupations. They have wonderful shrimp and we always take some home with us. When we go for just a few days, we rent a condo in the Sandy Beach area rather than use our MP for an entire week.

In February 2010, I drove down there with 3 other gals for 3 nights in a great condo. February is off season there so the units were very reasonable when split by 4 people. In the summer, the condos on the beach are pretty pricey. It is also quite hot there in August.

Puerto Pensca must be a safe enough place even if it is on the USA border. Whats your take on the safty issue. Is this destination close enough to the border to use your USA auto insurance ?

                              Thanks
