On-site car rental at Grand Mayan RM

We have been to the GM at the Riviera Mayan and Nuevo Vallarta. Each time we stayed for two weeks, and never saw a need for a rental car. We are content to pay an occasional taxi fee for shopping & dining, cook some of our meals, or use room service or on-site restaurants. We have been to the Cancun region 7 times, so have taken all the tours we ever need.

My cousin & DH is going with us in January, and he gets restless. He wants to rent a car for two weeks, which will cost over $800 for a standard size with insurance and the extra driver. Does anyone have any experience with the rates if we choose to just rent for an occasional day directly at the GM?

When we were there in March 2007, there was an Alamo counter the MP/GM. The prices he quoted per day were much higher than what I had booked online at the Playa del Carmen Alamo. It is not that hard to get to Playa via the Playa Express buses.

I reserved our car from cancunrentacar.com full size for $480/week. However, we will get the car directly at the airport since we are 2 adults and four kids. It just made sense considering the drive to GMRM.
