  • Back from Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya

I posted this on another thread as a reply but thought I would also post it here as general information

We just got back Friday from spending 2 weeks at the Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya on an SFX exchange. We were there 2 1/2 years ago so it was very interesting to see all the changes. The resort is much larger now and they are planning on adding another 600 Grand Mayan units and a new mega size swimming pool. That will give them 2000 units.

We really enjoyed it and liked our stay better than last time which is something because we loved it before. They originally assigned us to building 11 which is one of the new buildings. However we asked if they could change us to building 7 which is the closest to the Mayan Palace pools and El Lago restaurant. They gladly did that for us and gave us a unit in building 7 on the top floor ( 3rd floor ) for both weeks. The resort was very busy. Building 1 is closest to the Grand Mayan pool but we far prefer the Mayan Palace pools. The Grand Mayan pool is much smaller, has no palapas, and is very dead. We prefer to be where the action is and lay on the bed under the Palapa. We had no problem getting a palapa with the bed every day. In fact we were able to choose which one we wanted. You rent them for $30.00 /day which is credited toward any food or beverages at the pool or Balche restaurant before 6:00 pm. They refunded 100% of the $300 rental we paid. They gave us 3 free days free rental as well. One note: you can order food poolside from the Balche restaurant menu as well as the poolside menu which gives you a much greater selection. Don't pay any attention to the prices on the menu as just about everything is cheaper than the menu price. The food is good and quite reasonable.

Though the resort is very large, we find it much more relaxing than the Grand Mayan - Nuevo Vallarta which is more compact. By staying in one the original Grand Mayan buildings ( 1-7 ) it felt just like it was before the expansion as we pretty well stayed in that area. One thing we noticed is that the units in the original buildings show absolutely NO sign of wear and tear. They are in just as good shape as before and there is no difference between them and the newer units. The maintenance at the resort is outstanding.

They have added a lot more dining options now. We ate at every restaurant as well as room service. You now have your choice of 4 different options for breakfast. There is the elaborate breakfast buffet at the El Lago as before except it is a little more expensive( ~$42.00 for 2 persons including tax and 15% gratuity ) now. A 15% gratuity is automatically added to all food and beverage service throughout the resort except at the Deli. Other breakfast options include an American breakfast buffet at the 19th hole which is very good ( made to order omelets etc. ) and quite reasonable at ~$27.00 for 2 people including everything. The Havana Moon is a new restaurant right on the beach that serves breakfast lunch and dinner. It is very reasonable and offers both full American and Mexican breakfasts from $6.00-9.00 each. And then there is room service which is also good and reasonable. They also have a Parillada on the beach every evening. It is very good and offers grilled meats, chicken, and fish as well as salads, vegetables etc.

We spent all of our time poolside except for both Wednesdays when we went on the tours to Xel-Ha park ( excellent snorkeling ) and Xcaret which was awesome as usual.

The only downside was the weather was pretty cool and windy the first week. We spent the last 2 weeks of April at the Grand Mayan - Nuevo Vallarta in 2006 and the weather was much warmer than Riviera Maya and more consistent with no wind. It is much warmer here at home than it was there. However, the local folks told us that it was cooler than normal.

We have changed our mind and now prefer the Grand Mayan - Riviera Mayan resort to the GM in Nuevo Vallarta. The service was absolutely outstanding. I am already requesting another 2 weeks for next spring.

First, thanks so much for the review. We're going there for a week this coming Xmas and are looking forward it!!

I have always heard that one of the perks of staying at the Grand Mayan is getting use of their pools. Is the GM pool smaller than the MP pool? Can you use all the MP facilities if you are staying at the GM?

Everything is cheaper than the menu price?? How can you find out what the food actually costs?

That's another surprise. I have read many posts of people complaining about the high cost of food at the GM resorts. We usually cook all our meals, but it sounds like perhaps we'll eat out a few times.

What is a Parillada? Any idea what the least expensive dinner would be at the restaurants? We have been to Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, and one of the nice things about it was having several different dining options - from fancy to super family friendly. Eating on the beach sounds nice for a family of 5 (with 3 elementary school-aged kids).

Did you notice if there are a lot of children's activities on-site?

    Thanks!

They have planned children's activities each day and babysitting is available for those too young to participate in the children's activities.

I guess everyone's views/preferences differ. We didn't like the fact that going to the beach and pool involves a long walk. We knew that could be the case since 2008 was our second year there, but we personally prefer Nueva Vallerta because of its more compact design. To us, this is especially critical since we have a toddler and its a bit of a pain to trek back and forth for 10 minutes for naps, etc.

Also, GM-RM is always a construction zone, which is also not really as appealing, whereas Nueva Vallerta and the other resorts are generally not under a state of constant construction.

If you don't wish to walk to the pools or beach, there is a free shuttle that takes you right to the pools. We didn't notice the construction ar all.

            1. Yes, the GM pool is much smaller than the Mayan Palace pools. Grand Mayan guests can always use all of the Mayan Palace facilities at any of the Grand Mayan resorts but Mayan Palace guests cannot use the Grand Mayan amenities.

            2. I said almost everything was cheaper, not everything. The price differences in the Balche restaurant menu was for poolside service. For example I ate their steak sandwich with steak fries ( very good ) several times. It is listed on the menu at 120 pesos ( ~$12.00 ) but was only charged 95 pesos ( ~$9.50 ). There were similar differences on other items. We don't pay a lot of attention to the the cost of things but one couldn't help but notice the differences. The menu prices are very reasonable in themselves.

The Balche restaurant is right next to the pool. You have the option during the day ( 11:30 - ~5:00 pm ) of either eating in the restaurant or having your food delivered poolside. The poolside menu is a subset of the restaurant's menu however you can order anything on the restaurant's menu. It is posted at the entrance to the restaurant or you can ask your waiter to bring you the Balche menu. The restaurant itself is open until 10:30 PM.

Room service, which we often used, is also quite reasonable.

            3. We have stayed at many luxury resorts in Mexico, USA, and Canada and trust me, the food prices are very reasonable at the Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya. We never cook any meals on Vacation.

            4. A Parillada is where the meats are cooked on a grill ( BBQ ). I am not sure what it cost but I think it was around $20.00. We ate there once and it was very good. We would have eaten there more often but I do NOT like eating at the beach. I hate walking on the sand.

            5. Our kids are all adults so I don't have any experience with the kid's programs other than I know there are a lot of activities for children of all ages.

John, are you a Grand Mayan owner? Or, are you requesting through an exchange company?

I'm not John, but he uses SFX to trade into the Grand Mayans and has never had a problem with being moved to a Mayan from a Grand Mayan. If you want to go there more than once every four years, SFX is the way to go.

I have stayed at GM NV and GM ACA and found the food reasonable in price and of good quality.

I am returning to GM NV on an SFX exchange in January.

John, when u checked in, did you have to go to the "RCI" line or are all check-ins togther regardless of whether u r an owner or exchanger.

I seem to remember that in 2006 there was a seperate "RCI" check-in at GM NV - but not at GM ACA.

I missed my RCI exchange into GM RM this past Feb. because of a parent's health issue so can not comment about that location other then to say my friends found it VERY spread out and moved from the GM to the MP after the first night because it took 2 buses and 30 minutes to get to the restaurant for dinner.

While we loved the beauty of the Grand Mayan RM units, I have to comment with regard to the expansiveness of this resort. We are in excellent health and brought a stroller anticipating the long walks. We didn't enjoy the long waits for the shuttle so we walked everywhere. I think being in buildings 1-7 is critical, as one is able to utilize the sidewalks as apposed to the streets until one gets to the sidewalks. We were not so lucky in building nine.

We really didn't mind the walking. However, when our 1 year old develped a hernia and I needed one of the shuttles to take us to the lobby to hail a cab, none could be found. I called ahead from our room and then walked up and down the resort street. I flagged down every car possible, but none were guest shuttles. I asked anyone I saw to please try to contact one as I walked hurridly toward the lobby. I made it, though winded, before any transportation crossed my path.

After three days in the hospital and successful surgery, it was easy to explain to the salesperson why we would not be interested in upgrading our MP ownership to Grand Mayan. Incidentally, the salesperson said that they are still so new and working out the glitches. Small resorts do have their charm and convenience.

There were NOT separate lines for check-in. However, the Grand Mayan reception was in a temporary ( Tent ) facility as they had a fire at the regular GM reception. I am sure that the regular one will be back in order in a few weeks. It doesn't really matter to me as we always get we want anyway.
