I'm going to be going to the Grand Mayan NV in April. Does anybody have any suggestions or tips?

Good restaurants to visit off the resort?

Is there 15% added to bills like at Grand Mayan RM?

What is the policy about bringing your own drinks down to the pool/beach? What if you are descrete about it?

i have stayed at the grand Mayan 6 times so Im pretty familar with the resort.. As an exchanger more than likekly your room will be facing the parking lot so son't expect anythingless. They will approach you when you check in and ask you about the timeshare prsentation and if you say no they will probably keep calling your room. Just say no.

The restaurants on site are not bad and not that pricey. If you walk to the Mayan Palace about 5minutes away they have a restayrant that has nice buffets I would do that.

There is restaurant outside the resort about 5minutes called La Laguna I would consider that and also one at Paradise Village Mall called Brazil where they keep feding you different types of meat. I would probaby take a yax and go to the restaurants in Buscerias rather than in PV . More comerciial in PV more expensive and less food. and also Welcome to the board

We were there in Oct 2007, and don't recall the automatic 15%, but that may have changed by now.
They have a rule about not carrying food & drinks to the pool, and I got stopped one day with a cooler. I slipped a small cooler in a beach bag, was discreet, and never had a problem

Fajita Republic in NV, up by Grand Velas is a great restaurant with a very varied menu and neat ambiance.

I also recommend Fajita Republic. The Italian restaurant at the resort is very good as is the restaurant at the far end of the resort on the MP end of the beach walk - they recently changed the name, but it is overlooking the beach. Just outside the main gate towards PV are a couple of restaurants too. My "kids" really liked the Sports Bar above the OXXO store and the Argentinean Steak place across the street - La Portena. We also like the beachfront restuaurants in Bucerias. All of them are pretty good and priced reasonably.

We always take a small collapsible cooler to the beach. They are pretty picky at the pool area, so we take 54 oz Bubba Kegs that we bring with us. They are $10 at Home Depot. I start the day with water to hydrate and then when it is empty I start with adult beverages.

They did not add the tip to the tab in November 2008 - except for room service tabs.

This is a great resort and you will have a great time.

A couple of other thoughts.
Last time we were there they would not let you take the pool towels to the room (My wife usually uses one as a coverup but they would not let her take it I did complain loudly maybe this has changed as for a religious Catholic country this did not make sense)
The surface on the pool decks is rough you need sandals or other footgear to protect your feet.
But we had a great time we are going back.

A couple of restaurants we really liked last time we were there.
Las Almendritos Very close location
El Pescatore at Paradise Village
In the Paradise Village Mall there was a Mexican Restaurant that was pretty good and reasonable.
Guidos just down the road past the Sea Garden was good.
Karens in Bucerias was outstanding.
We will try the Argentenian Steak house El Portena on our next visit.
Robertos in PV has great Bacon Wrapped Cheese Stuffed Shrimp (In fact all of their food is very good)
I like La Laguna too great shrimp My wife had a tough New York Steak there so she would say avoid it but I disagree.

What about the laundry facilities, we are hoping to travel without checking bags so if the laundry is close by, like one on each floor, that would work out well.

Also, I heard that if you make it through the sales pitch you get a discount on all of your bar and restaurant bills. true? What is the discount, 10 percent?

As for the sales pitch - if you are willing to spend 4-5 grueling hours - go for it. It is not worth 10% to me! We do not charge that much to our room and like to go to PV & Bucerias for some meals.

I am a Mayan owner as well and as Pittle said for 4-5 grueling hours I do not think 10% is worth it....that are very high pressure sales presentations. If you must do it, then try via a street shark, where you probably can get $400. US or 4000 pesos or such.....to me they are just too high pressure and have no concept of the word no, whether with a Boston accent, Texas accent, or a spanish accent LOL

ok, I was just thinking that I know the food and drinks are gonna be expensive and I know we will eat and drink alooooooot. I guess I'll just spend the rest of my life trying to pay off 100 percent of it instead of 90!

I get to be in Nuevo Vallarta in 9 days and my wife says no timeshare talks: but absolutely no talks at the Mayan Resorts.
We get to stay at the Grand Mayan YEAH SFX
I will be down that slide probably more than my kid who is 15

GM NV versus Grand Bliss

We are going to Puerto/Nuevo Vallarta this Sunday and staying for the next 2 weeks. This will be our first Mayan Resorts stay and our first trip to PV. There are rooms available at Grand Bliss through RCI. Are they a big enough improvement to switch our 2 BR GM for a 2 BR GB reservation?

Does anyone have any suggestions for cheaper internet and international calling in PV?

You will be leaving as we arrive

We toured the GB, they are about the same layout, slight change in interior finishes, not worth canceling and rebooking imho.
The internet use in the internet cafe near the Brio spa is only 80 pesos per hour, About $6.20, works fine for our needs. They sell a declining balance card, so depending upon your use, one may last you for your two week.
