  • Cozumel Airport to GM advice for someone who can't walk a lot.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the GM shuttle only runs to/from Cancun, and we're flying into Cozumel, arriving 1 pm, Friday, March 27. I would like to hang out in Cozumel for a few hours since we're already there. Is there a safe place to stow luggage near the ferry?

My challenge is that I can't do a lot of walking. Is there a good place for me to hang out out of the sun, while my family checks things out? (I love coffee and margaritas, so a nearby coffeeshop/restaurant that wouldn't mind me parking my hind end there with a book for a couple of hours while my family frolics would be great! )

Is a taxi the best way for us (there are 4 of us) to get to the resort from the Playa del Carmen ferry dock? I know from traveling in other parts of Mexico that getting in and out of some vehicles in Mexico can pose a challenge for me, and we are a VERY tall, big family, so many vehicles are too small/jammed with people for us. Any other options that might work? How much will a taxi for 4 to GM be from there?

Thanks a lot for all of the great information I've already read here! (I have already written the concierge about my mobility issue, so am hoping I won't be assigned to the farthest reaches of the complex at least.)

The ferry dock in Cozumel is near the "downtown" area. There are several places where you could read or people watch while indulging in adult beverages and a few snacks. You could probably pay a taxi driver a little extra to "hold" your bags for a couple of hours. There is no place near the ferry to do so. I did not see anyone with luggage when we took it. All the people on our trip were just taking day trips to Cozumel.

The nice beachy areas in Cozumel are on the opposite side of the island from the ferry. The "downtown" area is just a bunch of shops to get $ from tourists.

They do have several vans and suburbans for taxis in Playa del Carmen. The cost is around $20-$25 for those to the GM. You will need to walk (uphill) about 1-1/2 to 2 blocks from ferry landing to get a taxi. Vehicles are not allowed on 5th Avenue, so you have to cross it. The ferry is $20 RT and takes 45 minutes or so each way. When we went, it was pretty rough. The gangplank will also be a challenge with luggage.

This resort is HUGE. Good luck getting a unit near the pool in late March. Generally, but not always, owners of multiple weeks at GM & MP get those. I have a "significant investment" with them - 2 GM weeks and 4 MP weeks. Therefore, I have the Profile A status and do get what they call the "most desirable" units because of that status - that means units close to the pool. There are quite a few Profile A owners. The buildings that are close to the pool and beach are a long way from the lobby to get a taxi if you want to go to town. The restaurants are near the pool area. There is a lot of walking at this resort. But they do have shuttles that run from the buildings to the pool and lobby areas. The newest units are between the lobby and highway along the golf course. A friend of mine used one of my weeks and two of my extra weeks and was assigned to the new units in late January at our request - we wanted all the units together in the same building. The extra VF weeks are not necessarily considered Profile A and would have been in different buildings than the register week. The friends said the units were nicer than the unit we stayed in a couple of years ago in building 2.

I have also written letters requesting special needs and sometimes they honor the request, and other times they do not. I did not want this to sound negative, just wanted you to be aware of how it works.

Thanks! We have owned at the Mayans for 10 years now and we have been to all but Cabo (have reservations there for the first two weeks of November). When you own 6 of their units + 6 VF weeks, you learn the tricks of their trade. I also like to visit with other owners around the pool. You can learn quite a lot doing that - most owners are willing to share their experiences with other owners. I have heard some great stories and some horror stories while at the pool.

Oh you will definately have to let me know how Cabo is, and the Mayan there I have Cabo on my list of places in Mx to go to.....I think they have a non-rainy season time or no rainy season so I want to go then...LOL. I heard it is not rainy when we have our rains here so that would be good time for me to go...but I have not researched it yet....Have a great weekend
