  • Grand Mayan Riviera Maya - Internet and Pool

We are headed down for Thanksgiving. Have they gotten Internet access in the units yet?

Is the pool that everyone has been talking about finished?

    Thanks in advance.

Holly You are going before me since I am going in Feb, so I can not answer. I do think the pool should be done by now.

I read someplace that the Grand Mayan had wired access in the units, and that the Mayan didn't. We use Skype when we travel and it's nice to have access in the room.

      I'll report back.

        Holly,
There was no access in the Grand Mayan rooms when we were there, but, that was two years ago.
I can't imagine that they would put wired access in as a retrofit, that would be quite a lot of work to pull wire, etc., and quite expensive. Wireless could be done easier so possibly that but it wasn't there 2 years ago.

I'm not sure about the Riviera Maya right now, but when we were last at the Grand Mayan there, you had to go to the Jade Boutique and purchase a declining balance card and use either their computers or a cable connection only in the Jade Boutique.

We just got back from the Grand Mayan in Cabo. They have do WIFI avaialble, but it is not free. The cost was 65 pesos per hour, 135 pesos for a day, and 650 pesos for a week. Last year when we were at the Grand Mayan in Nuevo, we also had to pay to have WIFI in our unit.

I have been hearing that they will have wired access for years, then that they would have WIFI. It only seems to come free with the newest upgrade packages - Grand Bliss & Luxxe (maybe Bliss).

We use Skype on vacation too. The WIFI broadband was pretty "groggy" and we did not get good connections. Twice the folks we called could not hear us last week.

I just called Verizon....to have my existing plan work in Mexico is an additional $15 for the month...that's a deal! Internet is not as critical now.

            Thanks!

We were at the Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya in April 2009 for 2 weeks. I don't know what new pool you are referring to. The new Grand Mayan pool was open. We didn't use it as we far prefer the Mayan Palace pool. There was no new construction going on that I could see.

I just use their computers at the Internet Café. It only costs about $5.50 to buy a card for 1 hour or $3.00 for a 30 minute card. You can use the cards as many times as you wish as long as their is time left on them. I never take mu laptop anywhere with me as it just isn't worth it having to carry it around.

I think she is referring to the lazy river pool. I personally do not think that it will be opened until the units on the south side of the resort open. Until tourism in Mexico picks up, there is no rush for the Mayan Palace to open that up and then have empty units.

When we were there, they told us that all construction was halted for the foreseeable future except to finish the new Bliss or Luxe tower or whatever it is called.

Happy to report that I'm in building 9 at the GM RM...the Grand has wifi in all rooms. 900 or so pesos for the week.

That is about $70.00 which is pretty expensive. I just use their computers in their cyber cafe. We always stay 2 weeks and I find that 2-3 hours during the 2 weeks is enough to get my e-mails and check out a few things. That costs about $10-15 for 2-3 hours and I don't have to lug my laptop with me.

Yes it is expensive. I gotta do it though...this work thing really gets in the way of my vacations!

I'm not finding anything really cheap here...at least at the resort...not outrageous, just no bargains.

I'm glad to know that they have it, but in my opinion, that price is pretty steep. I thought 650 pesos for a week at the Cabo Grand Mayan was high. So many resorts have it for free. I keep hoping that the Grupo Mayan will give in and have free WIFI at all of their resorts. So far, the only one is the Puerto Penasco Mayan Palace where it is free in the lobby area.

You know, we had a fantastic week here...I hate to leave. We ate when we were hungry, I got a massage and a pedicure, and the final bill came to $500. I'm now a Grand Mayan convert...next stop is Nuevo Vallarta. I understand that the GM there "puts this one to shame". (According to some of the guests)

I'll see, but I don't think we'll be able to go until 2011...I'm all booked until then!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and safe travels!

All of the Grand Mayans are great. Nuevo is really nice. The buildings are 11-13 stories high instead of the 3 stories in RM. The wave pool and lazy river are fun too. The grounds are nice and the beach seems to go forever.

The one in Acapulco is nice too!
