Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge Burns Down
PILANESBERG, South Africa: Large parts of the magnificent Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, were destroyed by fire in the early morning hours of August 18.

The fire was discovered by a security guard who raised the alarm and tried to put out the fire.

About 200 people were evacuated from the luxury resort around 3 a.m., including 120 timeshare guests, as the raging blaze swallowed one of the largest thatch buildings in southern Africa. There were no fatalities or injuries reported, but many guests got out with only their car keys and cell phones. Guests were relocated to Kwa Maritane’s sister lodge, Bakubung Bush Lodge.

The fire appears to have started in the kitchen area in the main hotel building and then spread to the reception area; the roof collapsed inside the wall structure of the main building, which also housed the bar, kitchen and a variety of stores. About 14 timeshare units were lost in the blaze, as well as the conference center.

Though the resort will naturally be closed temporarily, the buildings will be restored. The damage is estimated to run into millions.

Affiliated with RCI for exchange purposes, Kwa Maritane is a Legacy Hotels & Resorts International property. The company has a total of 18,522 timeshare owners representing 23,064 timeshare units in eight resorts including La Cote d’Azur, Margate; Bakubung, Pilanesburg; Brookes Hill Suites, Port Elizabeth; Castleburn, Drakensberg; Wilderness Dunes, Wilderness; Hermanus Beach Club, Hermanus; Kruger Park Lodge, Hazyview; and Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, Pilanesburg.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve is a Malaria Free Game Reserve within close distance of Johannesburg and Sun City.
