    Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.
An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.
"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.
The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.
Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site -- Menu Foods Income Fund - Annual General Meeting -- early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.
The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.
P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.
Menu Foods' three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said. Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.
"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.
The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.
Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.
Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

Thanks for posting this valuable piece of info.
I saw the recall Friday night but left home (and a computer ) Saturday AM before the complete list was available.
I knew IAMS and PetSmart were on the list, for slices of meat cans which we have.
I just told DH NOT to feed the babies any of the sliced meat cans while I was gone and that I'd deal with figuring it out when I got home.
I just checked and while the brands are on there, it is not the same lot #, though it does come from that plant. (they explained how to read the codes on the bottom of the can).
I feel a lot better knowing I never had any of the contaminated ones in the house. I bought in bulk when they had a sale, so I still have a lot of cans but they are all the same lot #s, predating the problem. WHEW.

Irene so glad what you bought wasn't on the site as recalled! WHEW is right!
I had a few fast breaths when I saw Iams and Science Diet on the list but that is my dry food. Thank Goodness! I couldn't take it if a quality product that I spend a premium for could harm my furry friends.

I checked the list immediately and our cat food isn't on there either. We feed them Wysong and you can buy it in some pet stores too. The list is on their web site. We buy direct from Wysong. They have a lot of good information about pet food in general.

I have asked our Vet many times to carry it but he prefers the ones that are on that list.

Our very first cat died of Science diet food because it was lacking Taurine. We thought we did him a favor by buying a supposedly better product.

It came to light later but it was too late for our Siamese cat. He died at 7 years old while all our other animals were over 17 years old except the ones we lost by accident (killed by a German Shepherd and one by a car).

Wysong was the company who found this out by researching the problem. No wonder we have stayed with this pet food for all our other animals too. Our last cat is over 17 1/2 now and is OK again after his dental surgery and infection he got recently.

TODAY I received an email from PetSmart about the Iams food I've purchased in their store. (i am a member of their club and always use the tag so they can track me ) -- but TODAY???
Menu Foods has known this for more than a month, but regardless the recall started a week ago - and they just notify their loyal customers TODAY??
Besides that, none of the links to check on what was recalled worked!

                    Recall expanded

I heard this on the drive home from work tonight.

1010 WINS - On-Air, Online, On Demand - Rodent Killing Chemical Found in Pet Food

Also Friday, the company that produced the food expanded its recall to include all 95 brands of the "cuts and gravy'' style food, regardless of when they were produced.

" The majority of our wet products are not affected by this recall. All of our wet pet foods produced before December 4, 2006 (date code 6338 and lower) are not involved in this recall. In addition, all of our canned Iams and Eukanuba paté foods are not involved in this recall."

I am SO HAPPY that I often buy in bulk when the food is on sale.
All the food I have of these varieties was manufactured BEFORE the problem and have lower code dates.

In this day of tainted food products, sometimes it's a good idea to have something in the house for a month or two before use to give them time ti discover what got screwed up!--- in this case, it saved my pets' lives. I feel so lucky for all of us. Those that have pets know they are truly members of the family. I am so sad for anyone whose animal was affected by this in any way.

I hope there's going to be a class action lawsuit against that CANADIAN, PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANY. All the more reason to BUY AMERICAN!

Surely you're not suggesting that American companies NEVER have an issue like this? Perhaps you've forgotten about the people killed in the Tylenol poisonings several year back? I believe that happened at an American manufactoring plant. There have been several meat recalls from issues at American packing plants.

As much as I love America it could happen with an Amercian manufactorer as with a foriegn company. I don't think patrotism will save you from this type of incident nor do I think you can ever be certain that everything you purchase is produced 100% in any certain country.

The world is changing. It is not flat. One needs to think global to survive in the future and no isolate themselves thinking that nothing could go wrong if they just stick with their own kind.

The Tylenol deaths were clearly a case of product tampering outside the plant. Adulterated product was found in containers that had been produced at two separate plants.

The leading suspect in the cases is the guy who was convicted of trying to extort $1 million from Johnson & Johnson. They had enough evidence to convict him of the extortion, but not for the actual murders.

Since then there have been several cases in which people have attempted to use similar tampering schemes to cover up murders.

But that's not to say those types of incidents can't/won't happen in the US. The better case to cite is the Jack-in-the-Box contaminated beef patties - as well as the other E. coli. outbreaks.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                            “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Canned pet food with a few bits of food swimming in gravy is a poor value, and thus I've not been affected by the recall. Thank goodness our dog and cat are a-ok.
